Internet is the end of the world. Internet connects pedophiles from one country to victims of other countries. Internet gives people birds' eye views of locations so that they can go rob and bomb said locations. Internet allows people like me to laugh at the people who trust the government.

So, in essence, the internet is the jackal and the end of privacy/control-of-our-own-minds and the world as we know it is the lion for which it is aiding?

Well, boys and girls,

*swirls cognac in a glass near a crackling fireplace*

Before the big bang, perverts in rusty vans, the spice girls and Chinese takeout food, a brilliant dwarfish inventor named Rodrigo Machado Entrolorro Ziono Emilio Rodriguez created a matrix of interconnected networks designed to enslave humanity.

*coughs violently*

Ah, where was I? Oh, yes…

The creator could not handle the grip of his brave new invention. In desperation, he traveled the world, trying to stab out the memory of his terrible invention with knife fights, prostitutes, drugs, cockfighting, and the like, until his madness finally overtook him.

the internet is a means of badgering people into buying things they don't need (aka advertising)

it's also a means of mass control of perceptions through selective news reports

In a literal sense, the Internet is the infrastructure, developed by the US military during the Cold War, which is used by the World Wide Web, which was developed in the early 1990s.

I don't think anyone should need to be paranoid about either the Internet or the WWW, but it is wise to be safe when using it.

The internet is big brother and big brother is us. i.e. youtube, facebook, googles, intellius, peoplefwalmart.com, etc.
The internet is the end of any resemblance of privacy for human beings.
The internet is the greatest time-waster ever invented.
The internet is the latest in a long list of mind programming tools for humans.
The internet is fun. <- - - wheeee.
The internet is the future, past, present all easily accessible.

I completely disagree. It is the first, real, uncensored, and anonymous democratic voice. Or at least relatively speaking over real life.

Social networking has been used as a tool for revolt, whistleblowers can post stuff anonymously, and regular people can overthrow economic powerhouses that control markets.

I rarely see ads (firefox plugins block 99% of them) and haven't been "controlled" by any selective news report. There is so many resources available and opinions online that its hard to sort through them all let alone claim that its a form of "mass control."

If anything, we have the complete opposite problem with the internet. There is too much data (not really a bad thing) with most of it being just noise. This makes the internet the theoretical memex machine (a theoretical machine that was to catalog EVERYTHING... which unfortunately means it captures all the crap along with the useful... ie a tweet about Suzie drinking a cola versus the physiology of eating/drinking). If you find a problem with advertising or media with the internet, its not the internet, its a reflection of human nature and society.

have you logged into facebook recently and seen the targeted ads based on things you click on ?

hell, I get ads for an MMO game I've played years ago without even logging into anything

it's all one big marketplace

although it is less intrusive than TV, that's for sure

have you read a US yahoo news report recently ?

it's usually "US army bombs target X in Pakistan, Y people killed, some may have had ties to terror networks" and three quarters of the comments are "yeah, kill the towel-heads"

“There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.”

-- Aldous Huxley

"Spending on Internet advertising continues to rise but slowed once in its history. The amount of money that has been spent on Internet advertising continues to rise and has since its inception in 1994, with the exception of a downturn from 2000 to 2002 after the Internet bubble burst."

1995: $37 million
1996: $301 million
1997: $650 million
1999: $4.6 billion
2000: $8.1 billion
2002: $6 billion
2004: $9.6 billion
2006: $16.9 billion
2007: Estimated $20-21 billion

How is that a form of control? I see it as a single news source amongst a plethora of other sources. You are free to get your news source from anywhere you want OR you can simply ignore the news all together. Its not control if you willingly submit to it.

The comments are a reflection of our society's attitude. I agree that its not correct, but these are people's democratic opinion and they are free to make them. Sure, they might be close minded, ignorant, and violent... but that's the issue with democracy - everyone can share their opinion... no matter how ill informed it may be.

The internet is not the issue. The content on the web are created by people. Its a reflection of society. The internet is only a passive means of communication.

Additionally, I'd like to add that ads are generated by your content. It takes what you post as your status, comments, user information, etc to generate ads. Facebook along with most other privacy related issues online are completely voluntary. You don't have to sign up for it and you don't have to spill your information. If privacy is your issue, I'd recommend using plug-ins like no script that removes all advertising, run a browser that supports an incognito mode, and don't willingly post personal information on the net.

The internet is not big brother. Its like the wild west. Unfortunately, there are a lot of predators online (commercial and personal) and its up to the user to be smart about what you do. If people want protection online, THAT will be the start of a big brother styled internet. With the cry for security will become the loss of anonymity.

Guys it's a trap! Isn't it obvious? WWW is THREE Ws! We are currently in World War Three as we speak!
