When I read a profile for an INFP I see things like this

An INFP will :

develop an inner emotional life that is often unseen to others, but is experienced as intense
When it comes to the mundane details of life maintenance, INFPs are typically completely unaware of such things. They might go for long periods without noticing a stain on the carpet, but carefully and meticulously brush a speck of dust off of their project booklet.
The polite, reserved exterior of INFPs can at first make them difficult to get to know. They enjoy conversation, however, taking particular delight in the unusual. When INFPs are in a sociable mood, their humor and charm shine through. Disposed to like people and to avoid conflict, INFPs tend to make pleasant company.

The list of patronizing descriptions go on, and on.

I dislike how INFP's are made to seem soft, I have never seen a genuine and unique strength listed for us. Furthermore, INFP's are treated as if they need to change their personality, as is their default behaviors are all self destructive. All other types are treated with decency, and we have threads like this
http://personalitycafe.com/infp-forum-idealists/1056-what-pisses-you-off-about-infps.html

I understand other areas have this, and quite frankly that knowledge is irrelevant.

Do you know what pisses me off about you?

You dont understand .....

You don't understand INFP's

Upon further review, it does seem a little trite doesn't it?

There's a possibility at least one of these descriptions was written by an INFP  After all, an INFP created the "What pisses you off about INFP's" thread, right?

Meh, I don't really care about the whole descriptions. They don't exactly provide the most accurate synopsis for any types. Essentially they are trying to take a conglomeration of characteristics in order to superficially describe what a statistically average case might act like devoid of individual traits and experiences. If you're like some people and start adding in the enneagram with it's types, tritypes, and wings......you're talking about a lot of variances that would take a lot of research, fact finding, and insane quality control to try and describe an even more extreme statistical average. I would do the math, but I've been mentally lazy lately. I think the number would be around the 5 digit frame....possibly six digits for each individual "type".

Function stacking and their relationships with each other in processing information would probably be more fruitful in understanding yourself. Ignore the stereotypes. Beware confimation bias as well.

Railroaded Remark: Just noticed this is my 666th post. Perhaps this marks my descent into the bowels of fire and brimstone. I don't think evil's ready for me :D.

Personally I don't find it patronizing; just honest..

Not every part of the INFP description fits me but the majority of it does and yes, that is how I am, it is how I come across generally.. there is strength in quietness, acceptance of oneself, the push to make ourselves/the world/whatever cause we choose better.. it's maybe not an `in your face` `harsh` strength.. but quiet strength is harder for others to achieve for the most part, which makes that in itself special, genuine and unique.

If you as an INFP believe you are soft, then take a good hard look at your inner strength and think about it.

I know that personally I am one of the strongest people I know, and one of the strongest people that many of those who have counselled me/met me have ever come across. I may not shout it from the rafters or make a huge fuss about it, but it is enough that `I` know.

It can depend on how you look at it too.. if you take the stance that the `type gumph` is an attack then yes of course you will see it negatively.

feeling that intensely is not something everyone can do, therefore they lose out on a part of whatever it is because of that.

So what if I am intense about some things and don't really care if my house is a mess.. as long as it's clean and I'm happy within myself where is the harm? however, messy people exist in every personality type just as neat and tidy ones do it is just that the percentage of INFP's that were used to draw up the outline of what an INFP is, happened to be that way - it's statistics that is all.

something to consider.. are some of those traits that are provided as `positives` for other types really that positive? for each positive there is a negative and for every negative there is a positive.

you know I never do see any threads talking trash about other personalities in the INFP area and I know why, it's because we are afraid to, don't think we should be if others are doing it to us >:|

If you think those are negative descriptions, wait'll you see this one:

INFP - Jung Type Descriptions

And just WHO are the major assholes who formulated these less-than-flattering observations you may ask? Why, it was INFPs themselves. A comprehensive study found that they are the statements that INFPs selected to be most true of themselves.

If we expect others to look at us more favorably, it has to start with us not being so hard on ourselves.

All of these things except for attracted to sad things and frequently losing things are at least somewhat true of me, but I accept it. But I also accept the positive things that come with being an INFP.

Those all sound pretty accurate. The truth hurts buddy.

I call falshood. Seems like you have some self respect issues, because I by no means am a weak and needy person.

While on the surface I can agree that INFP's have these characteristics, I dont think that is where it stops. And unforunately for these profiles, and most others that is exactly where it ends, with a patronizing and condescending description of an immature person.

We have a lot tooffer, read any other profile of a type. They list all of the positive and unique things about them, they need no work.

Every INFP profile implies that work needs to be done to make the INFP an acceptable person.

So no, the real truth makes this all clear....

oh yeah

BUDDY!

:frustrating:

buddy...yeah alright

By the way, the truth hurts you say?

You really adhere to that weak description?

Shame?

I don't believe we should stoop to their level bro.....as INFP we all have great capacity for empathy at the same time we can over analyze a situation to probably a decimal point....however I firmly believe that there is too much hate and pain in this world and as people who understand this very well why should we contribute to it? the vast majority of the world is going to laugh at you make fun of you your gonna get bullied in school...even when you take up a job...your ideas are going to be met with misunderstanding.....Never and (I can't stress this point stronger so I'm going to capitalize it) NEVER be a slave to your anger and NEVER give up..you are different and unique never forget that...the sooner you accept yourself for who the are the better your life will become =)

I have big problems with the Similar Minds type descriptions. It's like they have nothing good to say about any introvert. Ever.
Is the INFP description a compilation of INFPs' thoughts? Are we really that hard on ourselves (in general)?

First off, I was just joking around, but if you wanna get serious then we can do that as well.

I for one don't have self respect issues, unless you mean I am borderline arrogant/selfish for putting myself above all others and looking out for Number 1. I hate weakness in myself and I've done lots of hard work to kill of anything that makes me sound like one of those weak, needy, "immature" sounding descriptions of an INFP.

Honestly, I feel isolated alot of the times even among INFPs because I don't fit those descriptions alot of the times. So when I say the truth hurts -yeah it does. It forces you to look at those aspects of yourself and CHANGE them. Honestly, if you don't like those descriptions(which were written by INFPs) then fucking do something about it. Don't sit there and bitch about it, take action. Prove them wrong. Be the exception. That's what I did. That's what I'm still doing. I don't adhere to a "weak" description, or any description for that matter. I'm not defined by some textbook definition, or 4 letters of MBTI. I and I alone define myself.

And don't even get me started on weakness... Ask any of my freinds or anyone who's gotten to know me on these boards, and see if they would call me a weak Man. Glad to know, you seem to be on the same page BUDDY.

They don't know who they're dealing with. Beneath the seemingly weak surface, there lies a raging torrent of emotion, a torrent that we have learned not only to withstand, but to control. When it comes to the world of emotion, we are the strongest. The waters run deep, and they are powerful.

They would do well do fear us.

I find my entire personality rather contradicting, anyway. For example; in ways I want to be APPRECIATED as different and special (because I'm vain like that), but at the same time I don't like to be put in the spotlight. I want someone to completely understand me and what's going on in my head, but I don't want to let anyone in.
See where I'm going with this?

It's not about showing hate or pain, its about letting others know what we dislike about themselves. Not saying I want people to make a thread like that just wanna make a point to show that we shouldn't be afraid of what other personalities think ;) and I am not a slave to my anger, anger is my B#@*& XD it's sadness that which enslaves me oO can't control it even if I wanted to ( purest of evil ><) guess everyone has their kryptonite, also not to mention my intellect ego always craving to show how smart I can be :\ another evil which comes from the wing 5 ... loving being INFP hate being wing 5 but also gotta say there is plus side ;) .. and I am rambling .... lol

I think poor reception to criticism is one of the weak points mentioned in some.

I'd say they all have negative and positive, strengths and weaknesses as thats why it's helpful. To understand generally what the type is like. It doesn't mean you are this way but you may have tendency to some of the good and bad things.
Because there's no perfect balance in people, if you are to be naturally great at one thing I think to even it out you'd be poorly suited for the opposite.
So you don't try and be balanced, you simply work with your strengths and understand your weak points.
But also a person no matter their personality type can still do what ever they want, we have free will and this sub forum is a great example of the diversity of people within one personality type.
Its only a generalization of information for you to help better understand yourself and others. I know I certainly feel a lot better about myself knowing i'm not a messed up individual like some people would have me believe, but I have different qualities.

People don't always appreciate the good parts in people, many people fail to practice gratitude and be cynical. Look at the great parts of yourself and be realistic, because I think we certainly sell ourselves short.
The INFP's I've interacted with on here I can see great things about, they're are fantastic but I would have a rather poor opinion of myself.
I don't hate other types, but sometimes people can rub me the wrong way just as I probably do for them as well because the way we filter information is different. It's about tolerance and acceptance of who you are other people, doesn't mena you have to put up with peoples abuse because they're flawed though :)
I am rambling....hahaha
