Why you CAN change your type:) "must-read"-me "five stars"-me again

Two words: confirmation bias

One acronym: MBTI


You can use these two things to your advantage.


MBTI has such fuzzy edges and flexible borders. Well, to be clear, the system doesn’t actually. The Jungian model is pretty clear-cut. But when you try to implement this system in the real world, you can’t without changing some things here and there and accepting some exceptions. How many times have you heard, “the environment you were brought up can change the way you think about things!” or “stress can have an impact on your cognitive functions!”? Sure, I know the whole nature vs. nurture deal and how it accounts for variability in the whole MBTI system. Yes. But then once you accept this, you start to think what’s the point then?. Well, if you are like me, anyway. You want to throw a boxes over groups of people to categorize them and be able to understand them so you can make predictions and in the end control them. Variability complicates everything! It ruins everything! How can you know for sure this ISFJ will bake you cookies for your birthday if there is variability?? What if he has weak Fe and actually doesn’t care about these things? The struggle…


But this is not about controlling other people. I am writing about personal growth (ExTxs you may leave now).


My argument is that since MBTI relies mostly on confirmation bias, you can actually pick a type you want to be and become that type! How controversial of me, I know.


I actually used to be an ISFJ, until I decided that I was limited under that type and changed to an INFJ. Then I decided that was limiting too, and proceeded to become an INTP/INTJ hybrid. I am now lazy yet extremely efficient. Life could not be better.


We are biased towards the type we first test as, whether or not we were typed correctly. Because once you read that vague description of your type…bam! It all makes sense. The clouds dramatically move across the sky and let the shades-wearing sun shining through! This is what makes horoscopes so popular. People are really great at imagining themselves to be whatever they want because of confirmation bias. Basically, you can easily come up with instances that confirm the descriptions. It’s usually unconscious, but when you realize this, you can use it to your advantage.


I once watched a TED Talk in which this lady said you should not just “fake it until you make it, you should fake it until you become it.”


Sort of off-topic: I will have some self-proclaimed Fi users coming at me telling me you should be yourself. This notion of “being yourself’ is some weird Western idea of thinking that I will never understand. Yourself can be very limiting, and unless you change, you can be screwing yourself over and not even realizing it. I could go on about this, but it’s off-topic.


Back on-topic.


Basically, to change yourself here’s what you gotta do.

1. Pick a type. For example, I first chose INFJ

2. Read their description

3. Find traits you can relate to (and believe me, there are things from every type you can relate to)

4. Think of instances that exemplify those traits (ex: “INFJs have feelings and premonitions that something will happen, and are usually right!” Me: This is so true! Last week I had a FEELING someone was going to compliment my shoes, and someone did! Whoa!!!)

5. If something does not fit, brush it off as not fitting because of the way you were brought up (ex: “INFJs are reserved” Me: I was the only introvert in the family, so I had to learn to be outgoing and really loud. Like really loud)

6.Repeat steps 2-5 until you are convinced you are the type you want

7. Also, to dismiss the type you currently are, read the description, and put emphasis on traits you don’t agree with (ex: “ISFJs make really good hosts” Me: I hate people! How could I possibly make a good host! How did I even think I was an ISFJ? Nope! Definitely INFJ)


Although, I make some facetious examples, I am 100% serious in thinking that you can change your type this way. Or at least you can believe yourself to be another type so much that it doesn’t even matter what type you “really” are.

Well, I don't really believe that. . . I mean, I think that somebody can act differently than they actually are if they wish to, but deep down, they'd always need that moment of being away from people or have that disbelief in impractical things.

It's sort of like when one is told something they disagree with; they'd be able to tell their true type just by their initial reaction to it rather than the reaction they give after some self-convincing to think differently. That's just my opinion.

I'm sure confirmation bias is a factor for some people, but I don't think it's the main factor. Some descriptions for the types are so extremely different from one another. Some results may reflect a skewed sense of self, but that can really only go so far. For example, there's no way I could somehow end up with an ESTJ result no matter how off I was feeling that day.

You can "act" like another type based on stereotypes, but people of the same type can behave very differently from one another. And emulating your perception of a type isn't exactly changing your type. It's also not understanding type and cognitive functions. I can "act" like how I think an INTP might act, based on what I know about the functions, but I'd still be using my own functions to draw these conclusions and emulate the traits. I can't not. I would be using Te and Fi to conclude how a Ti-dom might act in that situation...

Yes, but if you think about it, many people mistype themselves. And why is this? It's because there is a difference between convincing yourself of something and believing something to be true. My argument is that you can actually BELIEVE yourself to be of a different type. Once you believe that, even your instincts will change (like the reaction you talked about)

There's nothing wrong with being yourself. But I don't think you should limit yourself. You can be yourself and you can improve yourself.
You see this is where MBTI becomes limiting. For example, my Fe is just as high as my Fi. Which came first, I have no idea.
Environmental influences like stress can make terrific compensatory alterations to a person's personality.

You changing your type is at least as self-proclaimed as the type you decide you are.

Now, you can say "I want to be more X / less Y" and work on it, like any average person does regardless of their knowledge in typology, but it doesn't mean that your personality changes. You still adhere to some type, generally speaking, and that's the type people are trying to figure out. That's why there are people here who constantly switch types on their profile or leave it as unknown, because they're trying to find that type that fits them the most, not the type they want to be. Personal growth and obtaining new habits don't change your type.

Either way, this whole thing should be seen as a point of reference. Taking it as some cold truth about yourself and letting it define you is pretty dumb IMO, largely for some of the reasons you yourself stated.

Hmm yeah I did mention something briefly about "faking it until you become it" but for the most part, I'm not trying to say changing your habits will make you change your type. If you read my seven steps (guaranteed or your money back!), there is nothing that requires changing something about yourself. This is basically commentary on how people relate to, on some level, all of the 16 types. What makes us pick a type really depends on what qualities we emphasize in ourselves:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this suggests you underwent some sort of change due to the type you picked.

What makes us pick a type really depends on what qualities we emphasize in ourselves:)
Fair enough. Personally for me what made me decide on my type was how it described my weaknesses, most of them being things I couldn't verbalize until that point, despite being majorly present. I do relate to some of the descriptions of other types since they are pretty general in their nature, but I find myself relating to my current one on a quite different level.

I like you :) And I agree with what you said for the most part. I believe that I changed from an INTJ to an INFJ (though it wasn't a conscious decision to become an INFJ) :p

I have thought about this, and I think it is true. You can be any type you want to. Change your behaviour, and people will type you as a completely different type than you identify with. Change yourself from the inside, and you may become a different person.

I feel like type and personality, you as a soul/person/whoever you are on the inside is not the same at all.

I do like to think that being an ESTJ is a drunken state - I will be free once I become an INTJ.
