Happily, I had an absolutely great trip! The food was cheap and delicious, the beaches were gorgeous and not overcrowded at all, everybody was very friendly and I didn't get sick/bitten/raped/robbed/killed in any way. Loved it.

Did avoid ice in my drinks and only ate properly heated food (and peeled fruit) though.

Janna - I am delighted to learn that your trip went well and that you are safe and sound.

My work often required me to live abroad for extended periods and have contact with the public, both locals and tourists. While there were many travelers who experienced successful visits, there were, sadly, those that did not.

Sometimes a little knowledge about local hazards can make the difference between a vacation being fun, folly or fatal. It’s good to hear of your success. I hope all your holidays are good ones.

That is a campground known as Kalaloch Lodge in Washington state. It's on the coast of the state in Olympic National Park. I go there every summer but I'll likely be going earlier than usual this year, probably in March

Thanks. And if I seem flippant, it's not really how I am. I do take the local hazards seriously and I'm actually a pretty safety conscious traveler, even if somewhat on the spontaneous side. I take good care of my vaccinations, don't wander off drunk in dark alleys (or "party" at all) and as a raging introvert don't even want to meet any new people when travelling (this is something that I'm actually a bit ashamed of - I travel so much that it would be great to say that I have friends all over the globe, but I certainly don't).

Next stop Spain in February, this time with my children.

No concrete plans at the moment, but I'll check out the rest of Eastern Europe at a suitable moment now that I've made Bulgaria my base - rent a car, drive around for a few days, one country at a time. Will especially check out Czechia as a potential future location. Need to return to Malaysia this spring, bring Eve home. Maybe pay my old place in Thailand a visit, there's one or two jungle trails I still haven't hiked.

That's it for now, but as I'm based in Europe now after many years in SEA, I suspect I will be found attending concerts and sipping smoothies in all sorts of unvisited-as-of-yet locations around Europe. Really need to find stuff I can do purely for my own enjoyment (I'm sooo bad at it), and quiet, slow travel & nice concerts fit the bill.

Never considered you flippant. You are fine.

I resided in Rangoon, Burma for 2 1/2 years. Part of my job there was briefing newly arrived employees and I was familiar with local concerns and hazards. Since you were visiting a neighboring country, I thought I’d share.

I’m happy to learn you had a good trip.
