Do you eat lunch alone when at work/school?

What are your feelings or thoughts regarding being asked to eat with someone as opposed to asking others if they'd like to join you?

    If that doesn't make sense:

Will you take up someone's offer or not when offered to eat lunch with them, or are you more of the person to ask someone else if they want to eat.

I've been at my current job for about 5 years now and the only time I've eaten with coworkers was at this one department lunch that I wasn't able to get out of. There's a cafeteria here but I only ate there the first day or two I worked here on account of how crowded it is. At the aforementioned department lunch one of my coworkers jokingly said "You know, I think this is the first time I've ever eaten with Proteus!" I thought about mentioning that was because no one else from the department had ever asked me to eat with them, but I didn't want to encourage them to do so. Ironically, about 3 years ago I had switched seating areas for the umpteenth time and some guy from the biostats department that sat in the same area came over to me and invited me to go eat with he and some other people.

@Proteus : So does this indicate you prefer eating alone or in company?

Is your reason for doing so because you can't relate to your coworkers?

Most of the time I eat alone. I will usually go along if invited, though I prefer eating alone unless those inviting me are friends.

I used to really prefer eating alone at work. I worked in retail, in sales...which is a super social place. I really cherished that 30 minutes of solitude. But I would reply to coworkers if they talked to me on my break because I didn't want to be rude. At times, I would leave the building and go sit on the sidewalk in a semi-hidden area when I REALLY needed alone time.

In high school, I was torn whether to eat lunch alone or not. I was not lucky in the lunch periods I was assigned. It seemed all my friends would have the same lunch period...except me. I would make a different decision almost everyday, whether I wanted to sit alone and risk being socially imposed upon by strangers [and usually some really obnoxious ones] or if I wanted to sit with some vague acquaintances that I didn't have much in common with just to feel sort of socially protected.
I feel like that sounds meaner than I really intend it to. Sometimes I really wanted to just sit and relax with myself, do some homework, enjoy my food, maybe put my head down and catch a break from sensory overload. [my school was really big and extremely overcrowded. we didn't even have enough seats for everyone in a lunch period, even having 3-4 different lunch periods] I attracted some really strange people trying to be alone though. Not a good kind of strange. I guess people didn't understand me deciding to be alone and assumed I wanted company... So all the kids who didn't have friends [but tried sooo desperately] would approach me. I felt bad for them and didn't want to reject them like everyone else did. But maaaan, that super-overbearing desperation was so exhausting and off-putting when I really just wanted to be alone.

I normally don't eat lunch but on those days I do, I normally have company. I'm neutral most of the time if the conversation is interesting and the person doesn't take their time chewing their food. I can survive if one of those conditions are met but when neither are met I usually excuse myself. This is one of the reasons why I hate carpooling, I don't like the thought of being stuck in a situation I don't want to be in.

My last job I worked twelve hour shifts in customer service at a fluorescent, windowless clothing store with piped in terrible music at Christmas! which is essentially the worst job I could work. I think I deliberately took it to make my life a hell, that's all I can figure. (4w5s can be weird like that.)

I HAD to eat lunch alone or I would have had a nervous breakdown being surrounded by people all the time, especially in that sort of environment. Oh wait, I did have a nervous breakdown anyway. Nevermind.

Unless invited by someone who I find mildly interesting, I would much rather eat alone. I avoid the employee break room unless it's mostly empty - the brainless chatter and superficial small talk gossip does nothing but annoy me. I generally won't invite people, I tend to read too much into their rejection.
