If you see gaming as a casual hobby, it doesn't really make sense to spend ~$300 just to get a console and then another ~$200 for a bunch of games, when you already own a platform you can use for gaming. Instead, spend some time figuring out how you can get that "I don't care, I just want to play a game" feeling from your PC.

If you don't have one already, now would be a good time to ask for a good SSD, as the prices are currently low and it'll help speed up the boot up time of your PC and the loading times of games.

Side note, there's good reason to think that the next generation of consoles is coming 2019, a lot of larger developers are gearing up for "next gen" for expected 2019-2020 releases, suggesting they know something we don't. So whether you want a console that will last longer for new titles or an existing console for a good price, it's probably worthwhile waiting a bit.

Well I would definitely miss out some current gen titles, so I wonder if they would be backwards compatible then. I only had 360 and One just doesn't have much that I never tried before, but I certainly would miss out Sony titles, that I never tried before and I have no idea if I like them or not. What I dislike is series continuing for very long time like Yakuza and you have to probably dig out PS2 to know what happened before PS3 era and even PS4 era.

I really don't think I would keep thinking about getting PS4 right now if its price would be the same as Xbox One S, but when it is 100 euros more for same hardware, I dunno. Well, software is promising, but hardware... I wouldn't mind hardware disadvantage, but like I said it would be stupid situation for me if I paid for it now and then in 2019 PS5 would be launched and PS4 would be abandoned. I don't think that in that time, before PS5 launch I will be fast enough to get enough games I want.

Xbox One S is interesting console too, but I just don't think it's for me. Also it would put me into same dilemma as PS4.

Nintendo Switch would put me into another situation altogether. While it's new and will be supported for a while, games cost like twice more than PS4's and One's and another thing is, what can I do with it. Right now library of games is atrocious, not to mention how hardware wise it looks like a massive failure to me. they still have nothing serious to play, if player isn't interested in Marios or Zeldas. While those aren't horrible games, but paying more for Switch than any superior console and only being able to play these things is like major slap in the face.

So I guess, it's clear now what will happen. I think I may stick with what I have, but I would like to make it clear that PS4 is interesting, just that it's bad time to buy any console if you aren't rich. I may as well just see what can my hacked X360 can do or what emulators can do on PC.

Of course they should know something more than us, but I would be skeptical about next gen being all that cool. I bet they still gonna use x86 architecture and AMD (Vega) APU. Maybe memory cards as storage, more RAM, more VRAM. Consoles just don't have to be all that cool. They have to be affordable, accessible way to play games with controller at home and have convenient UI for that. If they put something like Threadripper and Vega 64 inside, then it would be just too prohibitive for potential buyers. Now to think about that, I think it would make some sense to use powerful ARM CPU for console as it could be seriously powerful and could use not a lot of power. They could make much smaller console due to that. Maybe even 16 core 2GHz CPU for very little money and powerful GPU. That could be a pretty nice concept.

    Thread update:
I spent my money. Not on console, but on my PC. I just saw killer deal for RX 580 8GB, it was for 219 euros, while normally RX 580s are for 240-250s and those are 4GB models. RX 560 will go to HTPC and HTPC will get Athlon X4 870K upgrade, which was a steal too. Only 49 euros. I will see if those two investments were bad deals or not. What I know now is that I already drool at RX 580. It's a Powercolor model and it's Red Dragon. It has all sorts of satanistic things going on and the box itself looks definitely sexy, look at that (Red Devil):

While Red Devil box is cooler and cards are awesome too, Red Dragon is very close and anyway I should better look at card. The card is value king and it can do 1440p well, so I'm hyped and it's gonna be my first brand new card that is semi high end. Knowing Radeons RX 580 should last a long time, because Finewine effect is still real (happened to me with RX 560).
