Favourite game of each year since your birth!

A gaming forum I used to lurk had a thread like this and it was a lot of fun, so let's breathe some life into this subforum and give it a try here! Your favourite game to be released in each year since your birth. If you don't want to disclose your birth year just say so and do it from whatever year you feel like doing it from, but it's more fun to at least keep it to years you've been alive. I'll start!

1995 - Panzer Dragoon (would probably be Chrono Trigger but I haven't played enough of it)
    1996 - Alien Trilogy
    1997 - Final Fantasy VII
    1998 - Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
    1999 - Final Fantasy VIII
    2000 - Final Fantasy IX
    2001 - Final Fantasy X
2002 - The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Honourable mention to Jet Set Radio Future and Panzer Dragoon Orta!)
2003 - Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
    2004 - World of Warcraft
2005 - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (Hon to Shadow of the Colossus and Fable!)
    2006 - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
    2007 - Lost Odyssey
    2008 - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
2009 - Zero Escape: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (Hon to BlazBlue: Continuum Shift!)
2010 - Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (Hon to NIER, Mass Effect 2 and No More Heroes 2!)
    2011 - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2012 - The House in Fata Morgana (Hon to Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward and Danganronpa 2!)
    2013 - Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
    2014 - Freedom Wars
2015 - The House in Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence (Hon to Undertale!)
    2016 - Persona 5
2017 - Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory (Hon to NieR: Automata!)
    2018 - Persona 3: Dancing in Starlight
2019 - Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

    Your turn!

Edit: Since you guys are listing more than one for some years I added some honourable mentions too, I felt bad not being able to include them. Tried to stop myself from just using it as an excuse to list every game I love.

Just doing lazy google/wikipedia searches, so I could easily miss things. If I haven't played a game in a year I'll go by which game I enjoy watching

    1984 - Tetris
1985 - Oregon Trail (Super Mario Brothers is second but I should mention it)
1986 - Legend of Zelda (second is Rampage)
    1987 - Roadblasters
1988 - Wow a lot of good choices: Super Mario Bros 2-3, Super Contra. I had a lot of fun with Ice Hockey for the Nes (the game with customizable skinny/medium/fat players for your team)
1989 - Ducktales for Nes. Such a good soundtrack and I preferred its platforming to SMB 1. Maybe not SMB 2 or 3.
1990 - Another breakout year. Super Mario World, F-Zero, Wing Commander, I can't choose
    1991 - Sid Meyer's Civilization
    1992 - Super Mario Kart
    1993 - Super Street Fighter 2/Myst/Star Fox
    1994 - Donkey Kong Country
    1995 - Crono Trigger
    1996 - Civilization II
1997 - Castlevania Symphony of the Night
    1998 - Baldur's Gate
    1999 - Silent Hill
    2000 - Deus Ex/Diablo 2
2001 - Another big year: FFX, Metal Gear Solid 2, GTA 3, Civilization 3, Max Payne
    2002 - GTA Vice City
    2003 - Silent Hill 3/Sim City 4
2004 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    2005 - Civilization IV/RE4
    2006 - Guitar Hero 2
    2007 - big year: Mass Effect/BioShock/Crysis
    2008 - Fallout 3/Rock Band 2
    2009 - Borderlands
    2010 - Mass Effect 2/Fallout New Vegas
2011 - Deus Ex Human Revolution
    2012 - XCOM Enemy Unknown
    2013 - Stanley Parable
    2014 - Mario Kart 8
    2015 - Cities Skylines
    2016 - Stardew Valley/Civ VI
    2017 - Zelda BOTW
2018 - Doesn't count but I have no other choices: Oxygen Not Included Early Access
2019 - Oxygen Not Included (coming out soon)

I haven't played any games in a while, but I used to be an avid gamer, so let's try this.

1985 - Super Mario Bros (my first console game )
    1986 - Castlevania/Legend of Zelda
1987 - Dungeon Master (such a good game)
    1988 - Final Fantasy II
    1989 - SimCity
    1990 - Fire Emblem
    1991 - Final Fantasy IV/Civilization
1992 - Kirby's Dream Land (spent so much time playing this over the Spring break - such fond memories).
    1993 - Doom
    1994 - Master of Magic
    1995 - Tekken 2
    1996 - Civilization II/Quake
    1997 - Final Fantasy VII
    1998 - Baldur's Gate/Metal Gear Solid
1999 - Final Fantasy VIII (my favourite of the series)
    2000 - Final Fantasy IX
    2001 - Civilization 3/ Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3
    2002 - Age of Mythology
    2003 - Fatal Frame II/Xenosaga Episode I
    2004 - Sims 2 (first game I modded - still playing today)
    2005 - Civilization IV/Guitar Hero
2006 - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
    2007 - Mass Effect
    2008 - Spore/Fable II
    2009 - Borderlands/Dragon Age: Origins
    2010 - Mass Effect 2
    2011 - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
    2012 - Guild Wars 2
    2013 - Fire Emblem: Awakening
    2014 - Civilization: Beyond Earth | Take-Two
2015 - The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
    2016 - Civilization VI/Pokemon GO
2017 - XCOM 2: War of the Chosen
2018 - Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
    2019 - TBC

The complexity of the story-line blew my mind at the time (bear in mind English is not my first language, so it introduced me to a lot of cool words too).

Re the game mechanics/magic, people like to bash this game, but harnessing magic from the environment made perfect sense to me. Sure I like the idea of magic being encapsulated in an orb like in FFIVII but it just felt more raw/natural the way it worked in FFVIII.

I've learned I do not enjoy making tough choices. I went through the Wikipedia list for each year and for a couple of them, I was actively hoping there wasn't another good game so I wouldn't have to choose.

There was only one year I honestly could not make a choice, for all other years I managed to pick only one game.

    1994: Little Big Adventure
    1995: Battle Arena Toshinden
    1996: Pokémon Red & Blue
    1997: Worms 2
    1998: StarCraft
1999: Age of Empires II (tons of competition here)
    2000: Escape from Monkey Island
    2001: Black & White
2002: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
    2003: Pirates of the Caribbean
    2004: Sacred
    2005: Civilization IV
2006: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
2007: Europa Universalis III (another hard year)
    2008: Assassin's Creed/Mass Effect (I honestly can't choose between either of these)
    2009: Minecraft
    2010: Fallout: New Vegas
2011: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
    2012: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
2013: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
    2014: Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
    2015: Grand Theft Auto V
    2016: Stellaris

It seems I haven't played any games that were released after 2016. Which is around the time I got into a serious relationship, which meant less time for gaming and no money to upgrade my PC, which was already pretty old back then.

What is it about Pokémon Mystery Dungeon that made it the top pick?

I see you both didn't pick Mass Effect 3 as your favourite, even though you both mentioned 1 and 2. Did you hate the ending that much?

Personally, Mass Effect 3 was definitely my second choice. The only reason XCOM won is because I got somewhat obsessed with it for a bit.

Interesting choice. Did you play through all of the endings yourself? What about it made it better than any other games from the same year?

Nah, didn't hate the ending; could be better but it was alright.

I just played GW2 way more, and I liked the game mechanics/the thought that went behind attempting to balance the skills/classes.

I loved getting new friend areas to explore and populating them, I loved the vibes of the dungeons and friend areas, getting and evolving new Pokés in it was really really addictive, I spent a horrendous amount of time playing it after the endgame. Really comfy atmosphere. I love water-themed places and the water-themed places in MD are among my favourites, them vibes. Interesting events and whatnot too. I wasn't a fan of the later games though, they just felt like a copypaste to me and I really missed friend areas.
