I don't get cognitive functions, at all.

    Hello everyone,

I just started to interesed myself in MBTI. A friend of mine got me into it and directly warn me about shitty tests, and encouraged me to learn about cognitive functions. Except I don't get it, at all. I can basically find every function true at 50%. So I tried figuring out by learning about the types in general. I'm pretty confident I'm either ENTP, or ENTJ. I KNOW, the function are all inverted. But what can I say ? Let me explain.

I was convinced at first I was ENTP. First I'm lazy. Second, talking, talking, talking, that's me. Debating is my main hobby. But debating about what ? That's where it get's tricky. I read everywhere the ENTP "can talk about anything", "is a devil's attorney". No I'm not. I like debating about politics, discussing about litterature and philosophy, but if it leads somewhere, to elevate myself, not just chit-chatting.
Plus, I'm hardly conservative. No just because "that's how it's always been". I have rational arguments about how tradition can structure society the optimal way. And I'm a traditionalist catholic. See a traditionalist ENTP ? Don't think so. ENTJ seem more accurate, being the more turned to tradition NT.

So, am I a lazy ENTJ or a conservative ENTP ? (Or have I not understood a thing ? That's possible.)

I struggled for ages with mine and understand the cognitive functions... and I really wanted to understand which type I was. Thereís some great books and reading to do out there, I found personality junkie very helpful for clarifying my type, they talked about common mistypes etc and why sometimes the stereotypes arenít necessarily true.

If you look at the tertiary and inferior functions and how they act within each of the types that can really help! I thought, thereís no way Iím an infp! I can be organised, and I do plan things. I found out that my type has inferior Te, Te Domís are the organised, planning types. This goes against my Fi-Dom which doesnít like constriction and too much structure. I need to work on getting a balance between the two!

So my suggestion is to really read about the functions, see what resonates most with you. Also, not every single little detail will be applicable to you. There wonít be a perfect perfect fit, itís just what you relate most to. One of the best things I read is about how external things can affect our personality. If you have been brought up with tradition etc, that will have had an effect. Itís the typical nature vs nurture psychology argument. So think about what you were like as a child too.

Iíd also recommend looking at the different stages of development, personality type can look v different depending on where you are in your development, at the moment my fi is too dominant and itís probably unhealthy, fighting too much with my Te. I need to work on this! :) but it is common at my age for this to happen.

    Hope that helps a bit!

You need to understand how functions work before you try to type yourself. Here are three articles I always recommend to people who want to look into cognitive functions but don't know where to start, or those who are confused:

    Introduction to the Cognitive Functions
How Each Cognitive Function Manifests Based On Its Position
    Form of the Inferior Functions

If you attempt to type yourself or others without having a good grasp of functions, you'll very likely mistype and that would be a shame. You have a lot of work ahead, but it's worth it if you find it interesting. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask for clarifications.

Any healthy and balanced person should be able to relate to all of the functions at least somewhat. It's just a matter of which ones you prefer, and in what order. However, humans are incredibly complex creatures and typology is too limited to be able to 100% accurately capture anyone, and it doesn't even really exist outside of our own subjective imaginations, so I wouldn't take it too seriously. You might pick out functions in an order for a type that doesn't exist (for example, someone who says they relate to Ne Fi Ti Ni or something) and there's no way to work around that other than to pick the closest fit.

Just try not to lose the forest for the trees. The whole matters just as much as the parts. It's less intimidating when you remember it's pretty much just a game.

Why do you think you're either?

Traditionalism is the anti-thesis of what the intuitive functions are, ESPECIALLY ENTP. It's not impossible for an ENTP or ENTJ do be a "traditionalist," but it's not going to be typical.

Do you procrastinate or do you prioritize getting things done efficiently? Its easy to tell these 2 types appart. But you should do one of the surveys so we can check.
