Americans: Have you ever traveled outside the USA?

Here are your answer options:

  • Yes, and I am 26+ years old
  • Yes, and I am 25 or younger
  • No, but I have been outside the continental 48. I would like to travel elsewhere, and I am 26+ years old*
  • No, but I have been outside the continental 48. I have no desire to travel elsewhere, and I am 26+ years old*

  • No, but I have been outside the continental 48. I have no desire to travel elsewhere, and I am 25 or younger*
  • No, but I'd love to. I am 26+ years old
  • No, and I have no desire to. I am 26+ years old
  • No, but I'd love to. I am 25 or younger
  • No, and I have no desire to. I am 25 or younger.
  • I'm not American, but I want to see the poll results.

I realize these may be obvious, but just to be clear:

26+ means 26 years old or older. 25 years or younger includes those currently 25.

Concerning "yes" answers - This includes Canada & Mexico, even if you did not need a passport to go there at the time.

*Concerning the contiguous 48 - This means you have traveled to Alaska, Hawaii or a US territory that is not a part of the contiguous, mainland USA on the North American continent. If you live in Alaska, Hawaii or a US territory & have traveled anywhere else, then please choose this answer also.

Not yet but I want to.

I've been to Canada and Mexico. There's definitely a trip planned next year, not sure if it will be Mexico, Belize, or something else that comes to mind. I'm a travel, language, culture, music, 'worldly' whore.

I would LOVE to see South Africa, Mongolia, New Zealand, Sweden, Russia, Argentina, and anywhere else the wind blows me (especially South Africa, though...I have an odd fascination with that place).

I wouldn't admit that I was American...I'd probably say I was Canadian to save my ass. Which reminds me, I'd like to see the Nunavut region of Canada.

I've been to Ghana, Canada, Australia, Mexico, the Caribbean, Malaysia, Israel, and Singapore. I've been to Singapore nine times though.

Apparently by the sixth grade, I had been on 50+ flights (counting connecting flights). My immediate family has resided in the same town since I was born, but we just like to travel. ^-^

I went on a cruise ten years ago, and we took port in the Bahamas for a day. It was a cool experience going through the markets, except for one lady who told me I had to buy whatever I was holding.

I'd love to go out of the country one day, but I don't have enough money to even go anywhere outside the U.S.!

Thanks for the responses so far.

I made this poll because I've heard people from other countries accuse Americans of not being interested in other countries & travel because the majority supposedly do not have passports (which we've only somewhat recently needed for Canada & Mexico). I find it ludicrous to equate circumstances with desire because many things can prevent a person from traveling besides lack of curiosity (ie. finances). So I made the poll to gauge not only traveling experience according to age, but also desire to travel. I made 25 the dividing point because it seems many take the opportunity to travel between 18-25, since they usually don't have a family & all of its expenses yet, but have they their own income.

At 27, I myself have been to Mexico & Japan, & I would love to travel waaaay more when my finances allow it. I do have a passport again, but it's yet to be used, unfortunately. I've also been to other states & territories, including Hawaii and Guam.

Nova Scotia, Bermuda, England, Germany, and France. Ironic that I've been to these places but have only stayed cooped up in New England and the Tri-State area as far as the US goes, though I'm gonna go to Chicago soon.

Agreed. And it a pretty ignorant statement in a number of ways, since the US is so much larger than other Western countries and across the sea from most of them. You can travel large distances and still be in the US, while in Europe you're going through quite a few countries. Also, when you don't pass a number of countries regularly you likely won't need a passport for your general life, so unless you plan on vacationing somewhere an American doesn't usually own a passport since it's obsolete. This is usually said by Europeans applying travel standards to America while making the assumption that we're a country just between France and Germany or something equally absurd.

Oh well, people can be pretty daft.

Under 25 I have family in Mexico city so I go there semi-frequently.
I have also been to Jamaica, and the Bahamas

Yes. I think I was 6 or 7 the first time; it was to Canada way back before passports were required.

I've been to Canada multiple times, Ireland, England, Mexico, and Honduras. By no means am I a 'world traveler' (yet). I'd love to spend time in every single country, but realistically my priorities lie with someday seeing India, Brazil, and Iceland; and visiting my darling friends who now live in Australia, Zambia, and Nigeria.

Was the accusation towards Americans not being interested in the affairs of other countries or lacking desire to visit them?

I have family overseas so I can understand where this accusation comes from if the accusation is we have little interest in world affairs. It's surprising to see how much attention the U.S. gets in the news in other countries. It's as if the stories revolve around our country. Comparing our news with theirs, there does seem to be a disproportionate amount of attention we give ourselves compared to the rest of the world. It's amazing to hear how much cousins know about U.S. politics when I have a vague sense of what's going on over there. They also seem to have a better grasp of the pulse of the world as a whole than I do(but maybe my cousins are just awesome).

I think one of the biggest contributors to this is how much attention our entertainment gets across the globe. We don't really realize this, but a lot of countries are interested in what we like (at least in Italy and Mexico).

edit: I just browsed Italy's version of google news and found an article on Eddie Murphy presenting at the Oscar's and a story of Reese Witherspoon getting hit by a car while jogging in Santa Monica.

Over 25, but most of my trips were done when I was under 25

So here is the list:

UK twice
Ireland twice

Germany; a couple of times, one of them when it was two Germanys: Austria, Switzerland, France( well one afternoon in Paris, as a stop over), Hungary, Yugoslavia; when it was Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia; when it was Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico, Israel, Egypt, Denmark, Sweden, Norway.

I think thats it.
