I actually think the preferences are not about genres in general, but rather about why a person likes this or that. An INTP could like generic, monotonous electronic beats that provide a good background noise for their thinking processes. Another INTP (I'm looking at myself, yo haha creepy) might appreciate intricate, long compositions with unusual time signatures and instrumentation. I kind of see those as a musical equivalent of intricate mechanisms. Now let's imagine an INFP, they could like this kind of music but rather for its atmosphere. This is of course a super mega giant generalization but I guess you can see my point.
I was just trying to not fangirl actually.

I admire your ability to restrain yourself from fangirling.
I actually said something like this earlier in the thread- that all of the genres we like share something in common because we're all looking for something that is mentally stimulating- but I didn't think of the possibility of an INTP liking simple music that doesn't require a lot of mental concentration and allows them to think. I actually find that pop music is really invasive and inhibits my thinking processes, while complex music stimulates thoughts and brings up ideas similar to the way reading a book and noticing literary techniques and how everything goes together in the story does. There's probably less obnoxious simple music though- country or something, maybe.

EDIT:
Actually this makes a lot of sense; everything just clicked. My mother likes to play dead simple indie music in the car and I never appreciated the music itself much because I found it boring. However, I always found that being in a car (and not driving) really opened up my thoughts for some reason. It could very well be that music; whenever I'm not listening to music, I have some sort of music running through my head that distracts me a lot.

See, this is an advantage of having a tumblr account: you can fangirl there all day so it's easier to not bother everybody with my antics here. A tiny bit easier.
I confess I was too lazy to read everything in this thread :p
I was actually thinking of some calm ambient music as a background noise. I do think the same as you about pop music, it's distracting and not stimulating, but then there are those weird things like dubstep or some hardcore stuff playing on parties these days and everybody seems to enjoy it (well... it's rhythmic, isn't it?), while I get an immediate headache and some pretty serious anxiety from it.
I don't really know where I'm going with this. Must be that entropy thing. Or my fangirling is trying to get in the way...
I'm attending some additional art classes and there's that one guy who always has some dubstep on his headphones. Seems to help him.

I've always neglected my tumblr accounts a little bit. I'm afraid to fangirl when people I know in real life follow me. That didn't stop me from posting some pretty weird things but it slows me down. XD

That's basically what I do. Then again, all people I hang out with IRL are also wacky oddballs so...
I stick some band pics here and there in between the "aesthetics"-does this statement keep the post a bit less off-topic? :p
(I should probably be asleep right now, pardon me.)

yes good we are definitely back on topic now

In all some seriousness, I listen to everything from Blue Oyster to BlutEngel to Beethoven to the Birthday Massacre to the Bee Gees, but my absolute favorites are

Murray Gold: composer for the new Doctor Who soundtracks
Within Temptation: symphono-gothic-metal band that I would describe as "a Dutch 'Evanescence' with better writing skills"

I also love Frozen's "Let it Go." Specifically the Japanese and Malaysian translations; despite only speaking English fluently, I cannot remember the last time I listened to the entire song in English.
