I've tried getting into Enneagram, but it just doesn't click with me at all -- none of the types do. I'm listed on here as a 5w6, because that's what I got on my first couple of tests, but honestly it doesn't sit quite right either.

Personally, I find the Enneagram too full of false dichotomies and extremes. I don't see a problem with someone identifying as a certain Enneagram if it really matches them, but I've never found one that has for me. Different strokes for different folks.
I wouldn't be so eager to discredit enneagram based on your own example...and even less so on 'tests'. There are heavy false stereotypes that surround some of the types, but the theory is itself is perfectly applicable once you understand it correctly. There's just a lot of confusing nuances to consider.

I do know that type nines often have a hazy sense of self, can easily mistype as fives and often claim to identify with all or none of the types.

Last part of my post: "I don't see a problem with someone identifying as a certain Enneagram if it really matches them, but I've never found one that has for me. Different strokes for different folks."

I have no desire to discredit Enneagram as a whole, I just don't see it as being applicable to me. I've read descriptions of each type (looked over 9 again since you suggested it), and the ones that seem closest only reach a "Sort of...?" on my match meter. I will grant you this: 9 is probably the closest, but I still don't think it's enough of a match for me to say that I can identify with it. I may just need to do some more research into the subject, but as of now I don't see it as useful to me.

That 1w2 description is weird. It makes it sound like our sole purpose revolves around leaders. Or maybe I'm the one who is weird. I honestly don't have the energy or life to try and stop all suffering in this world, or even to try and change people's opinions. People will keep using all those products made by massive animal testing companies because they are convenient and cheap. They'll keep eating KFC because it too, is convenient and they like the taste. I'm not joking when I say have a partial gag reflex just at the idea of eating chicken, duck, turkey etc, because I can't disassociate all the... I have come across too many people who cannot change. If people are going to care about something, they'll get there themselves. Otherwise, they don't want to and will resist. The only person I can change is myself. I don't have the energy or passion to fight what seems like a hopeless battle, and it's hard enough just living day to day. I am a failure of my enneagram type, and I apologise for not being useful. Maybe I'll manage that after another decade.

Anyway. Maybe it should be INFJ 1w2: Carries extra degrees of tension, and is too hard on themselves. I don't know.

I feel a strong familiarity with nearly every sentence in the 9w1 sx/sp description. Particularly these:

They can wind up feeling completely numb, lost, lonely, and longing for a blissful sense of completion that can only come from a relationship. Perhaps this is why no 9w1 is more pushy and assertive when it comes to merging. When they do, it's as if they are totally blind to any boundary between themselves and the other.

This typewingstack embodies the passion of sloth very well. They desire personal development and enlightenment. However, their sloth is always one step ahead of them. They know what they gotta do, but can't summon the motivation to do it. They get more in touch with their own willpower later on in life. They do very well in fields that involve listening and connection so long as they can get their judgmental 1 wing under control. They have less drive for comfort and more drive for intense experiences. These 9s can sit around and have long conversations with people they hardly know in the strangest places and lose themselves in ripples only the 9 is aware of. Their fractured identities can also manifest in their living environment....i.e. some parts could be on the warm and bright side while other parts are plain and unattended to. More than other 9w1s, this 9w1 can virtually run on a fast and scattered autopilot for long periods of time with virtually no productive activity. Depression and self-destruction is not uncommon. They are most attuned to the sense that underneath all the things they know they have to do and attain, there is an essential nothingness at the core of existence, even of their own 'identity', and this only further locks them into their narcolepsy. Afterall, becoming awake would bring them to terms with this nothingness and that's not something they want to confront. They don't usually have a social network to fall back on. They idealize connections to such an extent that finding a friend is like searching for a needle in a haystack.... As they get older, they can grow more guarded and less excited/open to the flow of experience.

There is a fixed design and that is the way of things. It dose not mean that we do not express all of the other or any of the other MBTI TYPES or eight cognitive functions. We do, attitude is a good vehicle for adopting an expression of an other type or cognitive function that lies within or is mirrored to the self by another.

Tri type, Tri fix, and other dynamics like the lines of movements between Instinctive types and stackers also allows the self to fix upon or utilise another function expression partly or in its hole expression. Mimicking is also a vehicle for naturally adopting expression for acetate or for fitting in.

We all have all the energies within and the 9w8 has six - severn MBTI energies 4 letter sets it utilise within its personal natural fixed flux expression.

Each of those six - severn four letter type has a dynamic structure pertaining to it, a first second third and least preferred preference or fourth preference plus there are different combinations for each of the four letter types settings (INFJ/IFNJ/NIFJ/ and so on) I think it's six or eight combinations for each of the six - seven components for each of the eighteen subtype energies.

Subsidiary Wing or and Mood - 1w9 ESNTJ
Conches or Core or type - 9w8 INFJ
Subsidiary Wing or and Agenda - 8w7 ESTP
Auxiliary Wing - 7w8 ENTJ
Auxiliary Wing - 2w1 ISFJ
Point of Integration - 3w4 ISTP
Point of Disintegration - ISFP

( Stress points - 4w3 ENFP & 5w6 INTFP )

So as you maybe able to detect even within the bracket of normal set functioning for the 9w8 the is a lot of cognitive energy to draw upon.

So that is more of how it really works but it's ok if newbies and those who are set in the basics of that they have been been told by teachers of the MBTI or the Enneagram because it is only natural that people will think or believe that it is random and not fixed because of the complexity that requires much time to unravel and identify.

Don't believe me take some time to explore the possibility that there is a fix design for your self.

I have been exploring the enneagram and the 8-10 cognitive functions for basically 25 years so it takes time to build the jigsaw puzzle. But I'm a slow learner for others it may only take several years to resonate with the larger model and it nuances.

4w3 - Has many alternate personalities that they are trying to reconcile. May sacrifice some weaker morals for success. Dresses boldly. Loud, funny, excitable and dramatic. Gets along with strangers.
4w5 - Authentic, would not sell his soul for the sake of approval. Strong values, good sense of what is right and fair. Highly stubborn and very resistant to external corruption. Likely to enjoy reading and writing.
2w1 - Relationship equilibrium and stability are paramount. May overcompensate to make sure things run smoothly. May be perceived as a smothering nurse and a doormat. Wants to be useful and valuable to others.
2w3 -
1w2 - Want to serve and lead intermittently, share responsibility, constantly re-check and re-validate authority. However, they can become disillusioned by human nature over time and choose to adopt personal moral goals instead. Want things to be done the right way. Dislikes lack of interest or involvement. Carries extra degrees of tension, and is too hard on themselves.
1w9 - Driven to turn their insights into reality. They have a vision of how the world should be and try their best to be inclusive of all parties. Tends to get to the point in conversations and has an aura of confidence.
9w1 - Could be seen as a bit otherworldly, not really present in the here and now. Wants to maintain and implement peace as close to their ideal as possible that they have a hard time leaving their heads.
9w8 - Maintaining overall peace is the primary goal, but is willing to pull a can of whoop-ass out if needed. An interesting balance of peaceful/passive energy and aggressive/assertive energy, thus making them a walking paradox.
6w5 - Seek to create a safe and reliable environment where peace and love can exist. Highly protective of self. Swift to seek retribution and payback. Particularly strong, competing inclinations towards both mistrust and faith, and like all conflicts of opposites, the solution doesn't seem to exist in either of them.
6w7 -
5w4 - An intellectual who is primarily concerned with creating interesting and workable ideas. They want to contribute the unique thoughts and insights that lie within to the world, and in doing so not become lost to the rest of the world.

@SoulSpark I changed it a bit. What do you think now?

I agree. It gets confusing for me to fully understand. The first time I took the test, I was a four. The second time, I was a 6. The last time my 4 and 6 had the same percentage and were the highest. I'm a four on here and I relate to the fours, but relate to others as well.

Right. I wanted to like Enneagram -- I really did. But I just don't find any of the descriptions applicable, and any test I've seen seems to be too black-and-white. Maybe there's some good ones out there, but I haven't come across them.

If I don't do this, someone is going to get this one very horribly wrong.

The Intersecting of Nurturing/Supportive INFJ attributes with 8w7 attitudes
-
INFJs nurture, 8w7's believe in survival of the fittest. An INFJ 8w7 seeks to "nurture others" towards the path of strength so that they can survive in a hostile world.

The Desire to Protect Clashes With The Desire To Empower...

Protect someone too much and they become reliant upon that protection. INFJ 8w7's know that sometimes empowering others means letting them face the wolves alone. An INFJ 8w7 will try to prepare their friends, encourage them, and will be ready to intervene if the situation becomes critical, but will often be "hands off" in allowing their friends to overcome challenges and learn necessary skills.

Being a Catalyst of Strengthening One's Friends Overrides The INFJ's Desire For Harmony
INFJ 8w7's will say the painful truth and will shatter harmony for the greater good (being such fans of competitiveness, they distrust echo chambers to the extreme), but they understand how to create harmony and can make excellent diplomats so long as their legendary anger doesn't boil up over their perceptions of "unjust behavior".

Most likely way to provoke an INFJ 8w7's Hostility
-Treating an INFJ 8w7 with blatant disrespect.
-Attacking the innocent
-Causing harm to others without proper ethical justification.

What Does An 8w7's "True Friendship" Entail?
Due to their rather darwinistic approach to life, 8w7's often look too intimidating to bother befriending. Due to 8w7's challenging those around them to be stronger and more effective, they may not seem very welcoming.

Don't let this fool you. An INFJ 8w7 views most creatures as imperfectly strong, him/herself included, but believes in your ability to grow each day. An INFJ 8w7 friend wants you to become the best version of you that you can be, wanting that also for themselves and will be truthful in critique in pursuit of that. An INFJ 8w7 friend will, at their highest level of trust, seek a friend to be a sparring partner so that the two can challenge each other and help each other grow.
