Greetings ENTPs,

Hope the day's treating you well so far. As the title of this thread suggests, were you--and how often--mistyped as ISTP, ever? What made you think you're an ENTP rather than ISTP?

Also, a bonus question- since both are Ti-Fe types, so they'll seem similar in terms of behavior, attitude, and overall character, the only difference in how they perceive the world around them. So, when does an ENTP "look" like an ISTP? Yes, as I just said they'll seem similar in terms of behavior due to ti-fe, but there must be something deeper than that...

The reason why I'm asking this is because one girl who felt she was too cool to go out with me after asking her out guessed I'm a tie between ISTP and ENTP. :( She was an INFJ and quite familiar with MBTI (+ psych master's). I read both descriptions and fit with ISTP's need for physical stimulation and ENTP's appreciation for debates.

Thanks for your insights.

Dude, all I'm going to say is don't worry about it and save yourself the heartache. Some nouveau relationship is not worth it unless you've already bought a ring. You can get laid elsewhere.
Don't worry. I slaughtered her to pieces and ate her liver just to move on.. but in all seriousness, when does an ENTP look like an ISTP?

I might look like an INTP, but never really an ISTP. I get along well with ISTPs but there's never any confusion as to if we're similar or not haha.

As far as that INFJ...doesn't she know that ESTP is duality?? Silly girl. Although, from experience, ESTPs tend to date other SPs or sometimes SFJs.

I'll add that there's two degrees of separation with ISTPs, so being confused isn't likely. I've been confused with ESTP, before, because of 7w8

I'm really close to 2 ISTPs. I think we can look pretty similar at times. We can be extremely goofy, witty, energetic, adventurous, inappropriate, people pleasers, reckless, optimistic, insensitive, persistent, opinionated... We get along pretty well.

I typed as ISTP in highschool. I actually have my MBTI results and the test I took. I don't think I really was an ISTP, but I was incredibly shy during my entire high school career. Once I got my first job, everything changed. I was able to experiment socially with strangers without fear of reprisal or social politics. And after one month on the job I literally transformed into a different person. My managers and supervisors were stunned at how different I had become in a matter of weeks.

They aren't very similar because of Ti-Fe, first, dominant-Ti is way intense. I deal with an INTP at work, and you can see how he leads with Ti every time he tries to troubleshoot something. He picks the most logical choice (Ti), and then explores it to no end with his Ne, and then when it doesn't work, he picks the next logical choice (Ti), explores it to no end (Ne), until he figures it out. It takes him forever, but he gets there. (I usually get there faster about 85% of the time, but I know far less than he does... Ne>Ti any day!)

ENTPs use their Ti to evaluate what they have thought up using their Ne. Not the other way around. ISTPs have it all figured out, and then decide on what they want to do right now (Se).

ISTPs are even worse with Fe than ENTPs are. And you can see that difference in action. ISTPs are cold and calculating, and their decisions are incredibly matter-of-fact. I dated an ISTP for a little while, and I thought she was amazing. When she broke up with me, it was "This is why I am doing it, reason a, reason b, reason c, you just aren't the right one for me. I need someone that makes me feel right. It's not your fault, you're a great guy" It was basically Ti->Se+Ni->Fe all in one sentence. Almost in that order. LoL

The E/I change is pretty profound too. ENTPs are okay with spending time alone, but when push comes to shove, being around people or engaging with people is where ENTPs have all their real fun. ISTPs like dissecting the world the way ENTPs do, but they need their alone time. Badly.

I am an ENTP through and through, and when I look back at my history, I was an ENTP in high school too, but I didn't know myself well at all.

I can see a laid back ENTP with a load of 6, like a 7w6 looking like an ISTP. Maybe a 6w7?

Damn Chrome and site slowness making me double post. Grr.

When I first learned about mbti my friend started dating this guy (who turned out to be ENTP and I've become good friends w/) but I didn't really know him yet and I was out getting food or drinks w/ them and gave them a quick mbti test by just asking four questions ..and he got ISTP...later it became clear that he was full of crazy ideas and also an entp, but he can be quiet when first meeting people, he can get annoyed working w/ others, and he's a pretty handy/hands-on guy ..so it's def possible for an ENTP to look like and test as an ISTP

An ENFJ who knows a bit about MBTI said that she thought I was an xSTP, most likely ISTP. She said that there was no way that I was intuitive and argued the introversion with the fact that I'm comfortable alone and that being a sensor would probably make me appear more extraverted than I actually am. She also typed an ENTP we both know as an ISTP. An INTJ acquaintance also guessed ISTP for me, apparently I give off a strong "fuck you" vibe to some people which would indicate introversion and I think his justification for sensing was that I obviously didn't share a type with our INTP friend.

I don't know what would make an ENTP seem like an ISTP, but apart from the aforementioned examples I'm almost always typed as an extravert with Se in my function stack (ESxP and ENTJ) by people I know in real life. Ne and Se can seem similar, though. Sometimes I wonder if me and my ESTP sister share a type because she's basically a trendier, feistier and more goal-oriented version of me, but when I look closer there's a clear difference in the way we think. I guess that it would make sense to view me as a less out there version of her, then. But I've never been too unsure of my type myself, apart from initially thinking I was INTP.

I don't think ISTPs are easily confused with ENTPs. However, there are a lot of armchair psychologists who only look at surficial things (and I find ENTPs can be chameleons so the extrovert or even Ne can get lost depending on our crowd.

BTW, liking or appreciating arguing is not an ENTP only trait. How and why we argue is. ENTPs tend to use arguments to gain information and data. We tend to not hold staunchly to one idea and use devils advocate or really get the other person to question their stance (which I find pisses off SJs to the Nth degree) to figure things out. I know some xNTJs and xSTPs (SJs like to have you agree with them) that like to argue but how they do it is different.

People who don't know Enneagram see your image focus 3 and assume it's sensory.

I considered that, and it's probably true for some. The ENFJ is a 3 herself, though, so it was a bit weird if she decided against intuition based on that. I came to the conclusion that Ni-users who aren't too familiar with the theory might easily disregard Ne as intuition or something.

I once thought I was an ISTP, but I've never considered myself an INTP. Both irl and online, there have been people who thought I behaved like an ISTP.

So, I guess such mistype does happen, but not very often?
