When I was a kid my mom would dress me on holidays. She would always make me wear wool slacks(I'm allergic to wool so it was torturous), a dress shirt, suspenders, and a sweater vest. Because of this I have rebelled against the idea of dressing up on holidays.

In spite of this I still like to wear dressy things, but because of the above statements I have a psychological need to dress down on special occasions. So I find myself dressing nice for random things like going to get groceries or having lunch with a friend. They'll say things like: why are you wearing a suit to coffee? Or: Why are you shopping in a tux?

Do other INTPs find themselves doing this?

Typically I just wear my INTP uniform of skinny clothing in muted colors and, if you're lucky, grays. I do have a distinctive style, but it's not flashy at all.

I sometimes enjoy wearing dressier clothing, but again, not very flashy or eye-catching. Just a nice gray or black shirt and pants or something. Don't want to stand out, unlike my INTJ friend with a full white suit that makes him look like a plantation owner.

The only reason I dress up is if I want to get laid. So, never for no reason.

I dress up when I feel like it, but if I'm going somewhere that I don't feel a reason to dress up for, I'll won't make it as extravagant as, say, a long dress and heels or a nice blazer and slacks.

I wore a skirt and a nice jacket to a movie with friends once, and they were really confused as to why I did that, but I just felt like it.

No, I find things like suits to be oppressive symptoms of social hierarchy - or at least something rooted in such. I also just don't see the point.

I find usually find work clothes easier to be in than casuals. I suppose those would be called dressy. If I'm going out, I'd much rather go out after work than have to go home and select clothes. As such I find myself in pretty ordinary places not entirely fit for purpose. Once I wound up taking heels off and walking along the beach at night in full work clothes. I try not to let my clothing dictate what I do.

In most places, wearing okay clothes allows a person to fly under the radar for the most part. On the beach occasion I didn't fit into the town either because everybody was in surf clothes. People were staring, I didn't really care though. I hadn't planned to be there. In most reasonably sized cities casual clothes stick out more than dressy ones.

People question me more in casual clothes, particularly at airports. When I'm dressy service tends to be easier: smiles, nods, less questions, less checking that my bags are exactly in the correct proportions.

Uhhhh..... no.

I do dress up for work spontaneously sometimes, even if I don't have meetings. If I felt better about my body, I might dress up more (with form-fitting clothing). But normally I like to feel relaxed and casual when possible. I can't imagine ever dressing up for groceries or lunch (especially if I could make them feel uncomfortable by dressing up while they don't).

I think I'm more compliant than most INTPs, though; I was raised in a religious tradition that I used to think was correct (and there were just certain things you did and did not do, that still linger with me even if I don't think they have any universal truth to them), and I was more compliant and would rebel internally, not externally.

I'm also at the older end of the oldest in the Gen X generation. I think generations younger than me have gone completely casual; my generation was the "transition" generation from stiff formality to casual attire.

So what you're saying is that you basically never dress up?
No, because I actually do get laid when I dress nicely. Also when I don't, but it's a sure bet if I dress nicely. Anyway!

I haven't owned a suit since I was 16 and I refuse to attend any event that requires one.

My "dressiest" piece of clothing is probably a button-down shirt that I wear on the rare times when clients visit the office and my boss doesn't want me looking like, well, a 29-year-old software developer...

Bring the garter belt and thigh highs, I'll bring the manliness with a generous side of sexy.

To answer the thread.
I have to wear a shirt and tie for work so of course I have to lose the tie but I'll go places like that.
Usually with my sunglasses on looking cool as fuck.... no biggie.

A lot of interesting responses. Funny, by saying that I dress up, you guys seem to think that I wear the colours of the rainbow. When I was younger everybody thought I was a goth because I wore black so much, when actually I was just..., wearing black.

Now I'll just wear a suit with a black shirt(a black suit btw), and go out. Sometimes I'll even wear a hoodie under my sport jacket, just cause I'm super cool like that.

Well I guess I can rule out that you're a black rap star.
