Social 7: Friendship and Community

Image

When most people think 7, it is typically the Social 7 which comes to mind; however, it is in fact the counter type among the 7s. Less narcissistic than other 7s, the Social 7 turns her sensitivity to deprivation outwards, is usually willing to lend a helping hand and is often found in work involving social activism. Her charm, enthusiasm and ability to make people laugh means she is usually popular and has little trouble warming people up to her many ideas and contributions. Given the more spread out nature of the Social instinct, this subtype is the most traditionally "monkey brained" of the 7s, wanting to know what's going on everywhere and interested in a wide range of topics (she is often more intellectual than her Sp and Sx cousins). For the Social 7, friends are what life is all about. She is intensely loyal, even self sacrificing at times in a manner similar to 2 and 6. Common career fields in which the Social 7 feels at home are social activism, sales, entertainment and work involving children.

Examples: Steve Irwin, George Clooney, Richard Branson, "Esmeralda" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Self Preservation 7: Hedonism and Acquisition

Image

The most ambitious and grounded of the 7s, this subtype is often mistaken for 3 or 8. The Self Preservation 7 wants what he wants and will stop at nothing until he gets his. It is in this subtype that 7's universal fear of deprivation manifests most tangibly. The world is his oyster and is willing to work long, hard hours in order to have the highest quality food, clothes and various other hedonistic pleasures. He often has a political bent, allying himself with kindred spirits with whom he can exchange resources and express his true, self indulgent nature without judgment or restriction. Ironically, this is possibly the most physically sexual subtype on the Enneagram, often viewing sex as a connoisseur views a fine wine or tea. However, despite a typically selfish bent, the Self Preservation 7 is very keen on protecting "his own" and often serves as a responsible provider and pillar of strength for his family and close friends. More pragmatic than other 7s, he is well suited to the fast paced, competitive environment of the business world and may possess an entrepreneurial spirit.

Examples: Hugh Hefner, Steve Jobs, "Scarlett O'Hara" (Gone With the Wind), "James Bond"

Sexual 7: Fantasy and Grandiosity

Image

The darkest subtype of 7, the Sexual 7 possesses a somewhat brooding, melancholy quality which can resemble 4 (though he is, at this core, positive outlook and more self indulgent). He is likely to live out much of his time in indulging his vivid imagination and wild fantasies, mixed in with addictive tendencies and spurts of hedonism (similar to his Sp cousin, but often of a more narcotic nature which can resemble 9). If the Self Preservation 7 exhibits most visibly 7's fear of deprivation, the Sexual 7 most visibly displays 7's frustration; constantly longing for something out of reach, fantastical and out-of-this-world (King Arthur's search for the Holy Grail rings reminiscent of this subtype). Much of this frustration will be sexual in nature, as he is very picky when it comes to love and has probably invested countless hours dreaming up his ideal lover, for whom he searches desperately and fears he will never meet. Despite his darker, more introverted side, the Sexual 7 has a louder, more flamboyant side to his personality. He often possesses a distinct charisma and a flair for the dramatic and theatrical (which, at times, can border on delusional) which, coupled with his eclectic tastes and style, make him hard to miss in a crowd. Careers he is suited to include artistic pursuits, inspirational speaking and any career in which his unique perspective and insights can be put to use.

Examples: Lady Gaga, Lindsay Stirling, Salvador Dali, "Ariel" (The Little Mermaid)

Love it! <3

Pretty good:) The description for So 7 exaggerates the sacrificial quality somewhat, but it does capture the counter-type aspect fairly well. SP 7 was perfect. I haven't read a better description of Sp 7 in a while. This is a much more contemporary, straightforward and balanced examination, esp of Sp 7. The mistyping portion was quite accurate, as well. Sx 7 was good, nothing I haven't seen before, and you could have talked about the Sx neurosis a bit more. You could add more about Sp and So neurosis as well with regards to deprivation and countering-gluttony in the social realm, where that motivation arises.

I thought it exaggerated it less than, say, Naranjo's description (who makes Social 7s sound almost Mother Teresa-ish lol)

SP 7 was perfect. I haven't read a better description of Sp 7 in a while.
other descriptions focus too much on their focus toward groups (which they don't really have in the first place. strategic alignment ≠ group orientation. in my experience, Sp 7s are some of the least)

Riso and Hudson miss the mark, and the other subtype descriptions I came across didn't go enough detail for my tastes.

I need to make a few adjustments to the sexual 7.

you're welcome to make some suggestions here (you seem to know more about neuroses in general than I do).

This may be the most accurate description I've ever read about myself. I thank thee. Where is this info from?

I wrote these myself. mostly based on a combination of Naranjo, a bit of Maitri and my observations of said types in reality for example, Naranjo says that Sx 7s are "not actually very sexual" which I disagree with, and his description of Social 7 sounds more like a superego-heavy saint (Social 7s are more superego than their Sx and Sp cousins, but they are not as superego as, say, a 1).

Impressive! I'm not sure about sx 7s not being very sexual. It could be true. Comparing sx 7s to rock stars makes me yawn. And roll my eyes. The intensity does not have to come from an earthly pleasure (eg. sex, alcohol, drugs). The power of ideas and daydreaming keeps the motor running too, although at some point one goes out to seek actualization.

^ I relate to all the bolded. I am not loud and flamboyant per se. Flair for dramatic, yes. Charisma, only on a good day.

Let me get a stab at the whole type 7 deal, mostly in the realm of the sexual 7. To fill in the blank that SoM left and @Cosmic Orgasm wishes for.

The sexual 7 is largely that state of discontentment, or rather in which one is not really attracted to much of anything to be specifically, so they create phantasies in order to amuse themselves. It is mostly related to a psychological state of immense boredom, an innate distaste in the common and other such things you heard about. The sexual 7 can be compared to the 4, but unlike the 4 who searches for the originality, the ethological origin of who they are, the sexual 7 is only really immersed in finding unique experiences, and the embrace the totality of such experience in order to quench the dullness to his life. Another comparison would arguably be to the whole entirety of the perception orientation of JCF, mostly dictated by their own whims and wishes. As such, the sexual 7s neurosis is that of the hollowness of novelty, and the unwillingness to deal with reality. Preferring meaningless fantasy of something instead of the whole truth of another person. In this sense, the holy planning is just the infantile rejection of unpleasantness in general, though the SX 7 might in fact be orientated towards the darker aspects of human nature though, this is sexified to the point where the disgusting, embarrassing contents of their own inner darkness has all but been discarded, merely replaced with a more acceptable version. One free of such things as like incestrious feelings, shitting one's own pants and more of a focus on TOTALLY JUSTIFIED revenge fantasies.

Also for some reason I'd think of the self preservation 7 as being less of some sort of business man and more like a prophet of some sort. The one who shows "the right way", through words or actions. She is always right, and knows what exactly to do. It is a fixation on not being wrong. A point that I associated with the SX 7 instead, though that honestly didn't make much sense. So, I'm sorry for the sudden change to the 2-3 lurkers who read this.

very nice ! I think the Sp/So variant probably the most ruthless. Though So/Sp is probably just as dangerous.
As usual, as I'm biased, I think the sx subtype to be the easiest to handle. That and I loved the little mermaid.

I'm just talking smack right now for self entertainment. Don't mind me. I just really loved this post and thought sp 7 wow.

The description of the Sx 7 sounds about right.

Heh. If anyone can conjure up good descriptions of enneatype 7 it's you man. Although I wish you would stop saying the difference between 7w8 and 7w6 is anxiety vs no anxiety. That's a little too black and white for my taste.

I definitely relate to the sx 7 description, especially the part about frustration and daydreaming to sort of compensate for that. I don't have an ideal partner but I do have a sort of ingrained set of expectations as to the dynamic I crave.

I don't know if I actually *am* sx first but I think it's most likely.

(Oh, also, the 1D photo for social 7 made me laugh hahahah)
