5w6 and ISTJ?

Is it possible for an ISTJ to be 5w6? I'm stuck on Enneagram type, but this one seems to fit the most. I'm 100% sure on ISTJ as my MBTI. I used to think I was INTJ, but it doesn't fully fit me. Maybe the confusion came from the fact that the enneagram is more common in INTJ's.

If it is possible, maybe this is why I feel more stereotypically introverted than other ISTJ's on here. I always related to the INTJ level of introversion, but I do not relate to their dominant Ni or inferior Se at all.

I'm curious on what others think of 5w6 ISTJ and what the differences are from others of the typing. Or your own experience of being the enneagram with a less commonly matched type. Thanks.

MBTI is your cognitive processes, or how. Enneagram is your motivation, or your why.

MBTI is innate, and Enneagram type develops in childhood, and is the result of what you lacked, or the negative experiences and type of negative experiences you have had as a child. And because certain MBTI types tend to see a world one way, and prioritize a certain type of judgment, they are more likely to have some Enneagram types, rather than others. However, the circumstances and experiences can lead to unusual combinations. There are correlations between MBTI and Enneagram types, but there is no direct causality.
So I'd say yeah. It's possible.

It is. In fact, 6 is an Enneagram type, that is quite common across the MBTI spectrum. Since 6s are motivated by search for security, and by fear (whether they are phobic or counter phobic), and everyone can face that, every type can easily be a 6:wink:

I'm another 5w6 ISTJ (513 tritype)... we're really not that uncommon.

The distributions I've seen typically peg E1 as the most common ISTJ, but E5 & E6 aren't that far behind and it seems to vary between studies whether 5 or 6 is more common. Regardless, I don't think that anybody can claim that an E5 ISTJ (especially 5w6) is "uncommon"... there are several floating around here.

I agree that an E5 ISTJ can look/feel similar to an INTJ due to the nearly insatiable intellectual curiosity... but if you look behind the scenes I think the motivations are much different, with E5 ISTJs tending to gather knowledge "just in case"... to be well prepared for anything we might happen to encounter in the future. The more knowledge we gather, the less likely something we encounter in the future will be totally new/unexpected and the less likely we will become "disoriented" by it.

How do you experience Si as a 5? What would you consider to be your subtype stacking?
I wrote this a while ago in the midst of a very good discussion about Si... I was essentially describing Si by its base motivations rather than via specific observable behaviors/stereotypes, which do not apply universally (although I will admit that it may be colored by me being E5 sp/so... but that is exactly what you are asking here):

What there is, is a strong need to maintain safety and stability. To me, Si is an extremely "primitive", instinctual function. By this I mean that its raison d'ĂŞtre is insuring survival. It does this by:

  • Diligently monitoring the important elements of the environment
  • Providing a warning when something changes in the environment
  • When encountering something new, simultaneously stimulating both curiosity (it could be useful!) as well as caution/skepticism (it could be dangerous!)
  • Motivating to complete tasks (even the unpleasant ones) that are necessary for survival
  • Maintaining existing resources as efficiently as possible. Squandering them on frivolous pursuits can leave you short of resources when they are required for matters related to survival.
I believe the bolded item, although it applies to dominant Si in general, is especially strong in E5 ISTJs. Whatever I encounter, even if I see no immediate practical use for it, generates an insatiable curiosity to learn as much as possible. There's always this feeling that I need to learn as much as I can about and just put it away in case it's ever needed.

The full post is HERE, and the discussion it was part of extends several posts in both directions.

Yeah that makes sense that a sp 5 could have Si. As they hoard resources and dislike intrusion, there's the idea of being alert and remembering past experiences to be better protected in the future.

I also like how you describe it as opening up many possibilities. It seems like your inferior Ne is popping out a bit, but I'm guessing you keep more of these possibilities inside rather than letting them out like an Ne dom.

I'm an Ne dom, but I'm also so/sx/sp.
