I choose NTJ. Here is a list of some of the top chess players from the last century. There are four NTJs and three NTPs, but no STJs on the list. I didn't type each person individually, but rather I gathered consensus opinions from the internet. Nine of the ten are intuitives so that seems to be the biggest factor. Te would be a big advantage, but maybe the Si present in NTPs is also a factor, as chess relies on practice. Yes, Se might be a factor, but considering the nature of the game, it seems like a great chess player might start considering the chessboard an extension of themselves--therefore the domain of Si. I heard an interesting factoid that chess players consume calories like marathon runners while they are playing competitive matches.

Gary Kasparov (ENTJ)
Bobby Fischer (INTJ)
Magnus Carlsen (ISTP)
Jose Paul Capablanca (ENTP)
Anatoly Karpov (ENTP)
Mikhail Botvinnik (INFJ)
Vladimir Kramnik (INTJ)
Immanuel Lasker (ENTJ)
Mikhail Tal (ENTP)
Alexander Alekhine (INTJ)

That makes sense, so xNTP would also work. However, I'm talking about the best of the best, not just the average player. The best chess players need a strategy and need to think several steps ahead and not just view the chess board move by move or several moves by several move (but they have to see how the different moves fit togethor into a strategy). As a result xSTP may be out as they probably can't beat a xNTP or xNTJ (not saying that they can't beat the average player though).

Now it's obvious that the feelers might not have a chance (emphasis on might not, but it depends on their function stack). This is because feeling doesn't deal with stuff such as chess, but with values and people.

Now talking about Kiersey temperaments, I feel that the people that are #1 at chess are the Rationals (the NT's). Their are three other temperments out their as well (Artisans (the SP's), Idealists (the NF's) and Guardians (the SJ's)). But I doubt that any of these temperaments can be the Rationals at chess.

PS Don't talk about anybody in particular if you want to respond.
Magnus Carlson is supposed to be ISTP and he is really good. He's been World Chess Champion four times. I think he completely dominates the Fast Chest competitions, such as Speed, Blitz, and Bullet Chess. He makes great decision in a short time.

Just curious, did everyone you list share somewhere that they are the type indicated above? Saying someone has tendencies of a certain type is far different than the person confirming they are a certain type. I know this is done especially with prominent business people, athletes, entertainers, etc. My question always is where did they indicate they are even aware of psychological type or the enneagram system, let alone confirm their type?

Claiming someone is a type based on characteristics, in my opinion is what perpetuates the on going stereotypes. The joy of working on automobiles, being into extreme sports, working with their hands, etc. does not make one an ISTP type since most ISTP types I know including myself are not into such things. Yet people type others, or worse themselves, based on these caricatures.
No, I just looked on Reddit and googled the names. I just kind of took the consensus of what I found. They are just guesses from people on the Internet.
