80's Kid or 90's Kid?

I was noticing a lot of posts online (not here, but elsewhere) about 90's kids: 90's kid's toys, 90's kids problems, 90's kids shows. But what makes an 80's or 90's kid, socially or in terms of memories/nostalgia?

Image

If you were born in 1985-1989, it's unlikely you are going to have more than a few vague memories of the 80's. By the time 1990 rolled around, you'd be no more than 5 years old. All of your school memories would be 1990 or later. Apparently many people don't have a lot of memories they can clearly recall before age 4-5. So this person would mostly remember the 90's. They may be an 80's kid, but they don't really remember the 80's.

Comparatively, if you were born 1995-1999, you wouldn't remember much from the 90's. Most of your memories would be from your childhood in the 2000's. Would this make you a 90's kid or a 2000's kid? I've seen some younger kids going nuts about how the 90's were so cool and how they remember this and that, when they were born in 1996. They have maybe one or two vague memories of 1999. Are they really a "90's kid" or more of a "2000's kid" socially?

Obviously, you are an 80's baby if you were born in the 80's, but if we're talking about social issues, memories, experiences, a person might be more of a "90's kid". So, what's your opinion on this subject? Do you consider someone born in the 80's, but living their childhood in the 90's as a "90's kid", socially? What about those born mid to late 90's? Are they more 2000's kids? For those born in the mid to late 80's, do you consider yourself a 90's or 80's kid socially? Any other thoughts on this?

Born in late 76, I was definitely an 80s kid - my cartoon memories are of Transformers G1, GI Joe, Voltron, Inspector Gadget, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Duck Tales, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers... I saw Return of the Jedi in the theater (unenhanced!)

I identify with the 90s, though, culturally and musically - which encompassed my JrH/HS/College years. I'll admit to having watched my fair share of Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs in addition to Beavis & Butthead and Ren & Stimpy.

By the 00s, technology was becoming more and more common for children. When I was little, I barely knew how to use a computer, not until after elementary. But my little sister started learning when she was 3 or 4. She uses either a tablet or a ds for games everyday. She watches tv all of the time. I didn't grow up like that, so it's hard for me to actually relate to the 00s even as a 1993er. And the 90s were my most carefree years and there is many memories there, plus, I really did watch mostly 90s shows even when 00s started coming up. I listened to more 90s music than anything else even past the 90s. You could call me a 90's child and an 00's kid maybe

I'd say 86-93 is pretty firmly 90s kid territory, 94-96 and 82-85 more of gray area (82-85 maybe qualifying as both 80s and 90s kids?), and before or after that there just not being enough of time being a kid during the 90s to count. I never had to think too hard about myself as I was born in 1989. Sure, I was more of a toddler during the very early 90s but I remember 1993 onward. I have clear memory of the whole ninetiness of the times. I think I have a picture of me rocking my bangs and overalls while holding a Furby that says it all.

Don't forget mom jeans. Every mom had them. I remember the 90's bangs! When I put up my hair in a pony tail it looked like I had a bowl cut. Then there was the time my mom got me a poodle perm. Never again.

I was born in 1991, I consider myself a 90's kid. My brother was born in 1994, he also considers himself a 90's kid. I think my childhood interests greatly influenced his, we grew up with the same toys, watched the same programmes and the likes. So I think a person's siblings also influence the generation with which they associate themselves.

Hmmm I guess with my birthdate being in March of '81, I'd be an 80's kid. I remember Madonna from her Like a Virgin days, pink leg warmers, big hair, the Teen Witch Movie, Ghostbusters, The Cosby Show, etc. So yeah, the 80's. I still remember cool stuff from the 90's too, though, of course, and I was a kid then as well- I graduated high school in 1999. From the 90's, we got slap bracelets, Hootie and the Blowfish, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, so much amazing music I can't list it all. I got the best of both worlds.

'80s baby/toddler, '90s kid/early teen

I was born in 1980, so some sociologists would classify me as Gen-X or "XY." Which is it anyway? According to this site, it's "Y," but some say "X." I don't particular care, per se, just wanna know for sure. Must have objective criteria! I don't "do" guesswork.

Anyway, having been born in 1980, I actually remember both the '80s and the '90s from the perspective of the Monster Squad generation. Oh, and Chunk is my favorite Goonie.

'83 so I remember and experienced the '90s sharply. I know a lot about '80s culture more from siblings than my own personal experiences.

The Land Before Time was the first movie I saw in the theater in 1988.

I think it also depends on if you had older siblings. I was born in 86 and love the Little Mermaid (89), but I consider myself a 90s kid because I was the oldest. My friend on the other hand was born same year but had two older brothers, the eldest born in 76, so he experienced Terminator and Transformers and all that good 80s stuff because of his brothers, and he considers himself more of an 80s kid.

Out of the two options, I would have no choice but 90s kid (since I wasn't born in the 80s). Although maybe I should consider myself a 2000's kid, since I was born in 1993 and I really only remember 1998-1999, with maybe some vague memories from 1997, possibly 1996 if I really dig deep into my consciousness. I was just 6 years old when the 1990s ended and I lived out my childhood peak in the early 2000s mostly. Guess you can call me a 90s baby in that case.

Why do care if others label you? If you want to be a 90s kid, be a 90s kid. If you feel like an 00s kid then be that. Hell, if you were born in the 90s but love the Beatles and mod culture, call yourself a 60s kid! Why the hell does it matter? Thing is no one of my mum's generation would give a toss she called herself a 50s kid or a 60s kid, because being defined as either does not pay the rent or put food on the table. Own the label of your choice!
I was born in '94 and I'd like to say that I'm a 90s kid, but every time it comes up, it brings up some BS debate about how 'am I one or the other' or 'you can't be this because you were born after 19xx'. It's like you try to seek approval of something that shouldn't even matter that much. If I want to say I'm Generation Y even though this site says I'm Z, I will. I grew up with both the 90s and 00s culture, due to the fact that I'm close to my older cousins who were born in the 80s, and I grew up in a town that was 2-5 years behind place like New York and LA in terms of trends.
And don't get me started on 'you know you're a 90s kid when...' and it says things like 'you played with Legos' or 'you played hide and seek' when your parents did those things as children. It's not like dinosaurs roamed the earth when they were children you know.
