Can I be an Artist and an ENTJ?

Over the past few months I have had quite a bit of trouble figuring out my personality type. Although I've taken online MBTI tests, and consistently gotten a type (ENTJ), I'm not sure if the type totally fits. However, the next closest personality type (ENTP) has a lot of attributes that I would not be able to associate myself with either.

The biggest obstacle in being able to pin down my type is that I am probably above all a creative person and if I get it correctly an Ne person. Which I haven't seen many examples of in ENTJ's, at least to my knowledge. This with the caveat that I am extremely committed to finishing things I set my mind to. Which is not very ENTP.

Here are some details about me

1. I work in consulting for a technology company. My job is primarily concerned about deadlines, precision, and in general, being-on-top of shit. I do get bored by the lack of challenge, I have done creative concepts(tied to very specific real-world objectives), but most of my job related frustrations I have are tied to ineptitude by leadership, not the actual job.

2. I am extremely pragmatic. I believe that achievement comes from opportune risk taking, minimizing downside, and consistent dedication. People generally perceive me as a very serious person. For example, although I am very serious about being an artist I knew that initial success would be nearly impossible so I majored in something totally different in college to get a "real job".

3. I believe I am extremely logically driven, and am very much a moral relativist.

4. I am obsessive about learning new things. If I find a topic interesting I try to engage it as much as possible and find connections to it in the real world. For example, after I started learning about stocks and evaluating companies I put it into practice everywhere, writing down company names if I visit stores, setting a net personal savings rate goal etc

5. I get bored by lack of challenge and growth. Art is an eternal challenge and one of the reasons I am attracted to it. When I make art I can both be very spontaneous and very process oriented.

Random factoids-
  • People say I'm a snazzy dresser
  • I find it pretty easy to express my emotions
  • My girlfriend is very INFJ
  • Most of my college friends are hipsters who write creatively, most of whom I got frustrated with at some point for not being consistent in carrying out their goals
  • I keep a list of tax deductible expenses for art and have my work calendar blocked out with potential exhibitions I can apply to
  • I wrote a letter to myself as CEO with 2014 projections and potential risks

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Also sorry if this post is a bit long.

Thanks,

I know of an ENTJ with a PhD in poetry. personality does not equal job title or hobby.
FWIW, I found your post organized and easy to read. Te is one of your primary function, IMO.

In general, I drastically prefer discussions about concepts or ideas. I think some people have confused me as an introvert primarily because if conversation is centered on the day to day stuff (weather, clothes, what some celebrity did) I would rather not take part. If there is no linkage to future aims, or an analytical comparison (this could be a funny take) I really get bored.

I tend to make statements that begin like "have you ever noticed this in people..." or "do you think this part of society tells us..."

Also in regards to my art, I make things where one line spontaneously begets a head, that turns into a boat, that turns into a tree etc, that seems Ne to me. But I'm not really that knowledgeable about the cognitive types.

No, I'm fairly sure it's against one of the commandments. The only acceptable professions are consultant, lawyer and Dark Lord of the Sith.

< ENTJ and a (UI / UX) Product Designer for a profitable tech start-up headquartered in San Francisco.

I get paid to sit in Photoshop, design interfaces / interaction paradigms, and be opinionated. Oh and people listen and respect my opinion. Highly analytical, a reformer, a stickler for details, and I love problem solving. I connect the dots. I make ideas into reality.

Best part about it? I went to school for Linguistics. I dropped out and taught myself how to build web sites and it's been a VERY intense and fun climb to where I am at. Less than 3 years.

Okay I'm done tooting my own horn. BUT THE POINT WAS -- Yes, it's possible. Stop asking for our opinions and act. :)

Also, great creatives don't get bored. They're always trying to achieve the best and never feel as if anything they do is "good enough". They continue to aspire for more. If you don't have the hunger, maybe you're in the wrong field?

I think you can. You should never let your personality type dictate whether or not you're allowed to express certain interests of yours. It's just that... I think it's really ridiculous to say that all XXXXs do this and all XXXXs never do this. Because, that's just not true. MBTI is not supposed to take away the individuality of people, it's to group people who have similar (not identical) personalities.

I mean, there still is a chance that ENTJ isn't your true type--and even professional tests vary depending on who's interpreting it--but I would not let your interest in the arts be the reason for you to doubt it. MBTI isn't there to make you feel like you're being restricted to only exhibit certain traits. So don't let it trap you in a box, okay? I personally think it's great that you have an interest that is deemed atypical for your type. Individuality is an awesome thing, and it's your job to show the world how awesome yours is. =)

--I actually had to listen to this speech, in my composition class on Monday, called "The danger of a single story," given by author Chimamanda Adichie. I'm going to mention it here because I think it really applies to your situation. It's about how people define the many by the few, and the basis of incomplete views. I'm too new to provide a link to the video, but it should be the first on the list if you search Youtube for it.

My bad. Thanks, Mr. Adrian. Damn, that's some niiice stuff! I just wrote and deleted a long post about a bogus theory that the artist flow-state may have developed your extroverted intuition, but it was total bullshit.
Haha I would be interested in that theory. Here is me in a flow-state, and an example of what I mentioned earlier. It's a timelapse video of me drawing. Sorry about not being able to post links

I think I should mention that the intent of the thread was NOT to ask whether or not it is possible for me to be an artist. I dedicate a lot of time and effort to achieving my dream as an artist, and am wholly of convinced of it's eventuality. Last year I showed my work at Art Basel in Miami, so I'm certainly making progress. I am not going to change my long term plans because of my type, I am just asking if I could be mistyping myself.

I saw earlier than ISFP's and ENTJ's have the same cognitive functions just in reverse order, given that I am a balanced person it could be plausible that my weaker functions are just much more developed. So far that seems like the best answer if I am typed correctly as an ENTJ.

I am an AI sciences student, aspiring fashion designer and dark lord of the sith. I'm a pureblood ENTJ :p

Be who you really are. Your skills and talent have no bearing on your personality type. You can be a creative type regardless of whatever type. The way you view the world is what would be affected by your active functions, the things you create reflect that. That's all.

Personality typing is severely flawed in many ways anyway. I mean MBTI was invented to find positions for women at the workplace during a time when things were worse on many social levels. Then there are cultural factors which influence the expression of those eight functions. [My hypothesis is that we can perfect each function to the max. An ubermensch would have everything set to max]

Simply put; don't let a personality theory, a flawed one, prevent you from doing what you are capable of.
