I think there were threads like this, but they are forgotten and abandoned, so I don't want to bump them. There's some Depeche Mode fans in this forum for sure, so what do you think DM members types are?
My guess:
Dave Gahan - INFJ. Although he seems like an extroverted sensor at first, at I don't really think he is because he's a very private person and you will never see him anywhere except DM and other musical projects. His lyrics are waaay too deep to be ESFP as he is mistyped very often. He also was a weird and misunderstood kid at school and was very shy in early years of DM.
Martin Gore - INFP. Everything about him just screams INFP. He's very shy, sensitive, open minded, has unusual taste for clothes and his lyrics are probably the deepest, most hearth and soul touching I've ever heard.
Andy Fletcher - IxTx? ISTP/ISTJ maybe? I don't know... He's the least hard working one in terms of making music (he plays very little and only the easiest parts), although he does all the management for the band. He seems like he's a very guarded but generous person.

Former members:
Alan Wilder - INxx? Although he did all the hard work, programming and other difficult stuff, which would mean that he's an INTP/INTJ, he's a very warm person, especially in the interviews. In Recoil's Q&A he mentioned that he cares about other persons feelings very much, he also said that his favorite subjects in school were languages and art and that he was never good at maths/physics which is an INFP/INFJ thing. He also seems way too musical for an NT. I'm not saying that NT types can't be that creative, but when combined it with the other things I mentioned, Alan seems more like an INFP or most likely INFJ.
Vince Clarke - IxTx perhaps. I don't know about him very much, but at the first impression he seemed like an introverted thinker.

So, what do you think? Share you thoughts

After a long time trying to figure out Alan, I’ve reached a conclusion. I went from typing him INTJ to INTP, INFJ, ISTP, ISFJ and even toyed with the idea that he’s an ENFP. So, I ended up concluding that he is actually an INFP.

I think he is one of the most mistyped members of the band. Everyone thinks he’s an introverted NT and I understand, he’s smart, hard working, sarcastic and cynical. But those qualities don’t necessarily mean NT though. There are plenty of NFs that possess the same qualities. (George Carlin anyone?)

So even though he comes off as an NT sometimes, one thing for sure is that he uses Fi. He’s not the most emotional person, but he does come of as extremely sensitive and open. And he’s extremely passionate about the things he cares about most, like music, football, family, Brexit. He’s the one who directly interacts with his fans the most. He seems to care about them a lot. For example, Recoil Q+A, Selected meet and greets, facebook, etc. For the Selected tour, he once stated that it originally meant to be like a show or two, but it turned into a tour with meet and greets because he felt he had to do that for his fans.

On another note, I believe in one interview in the 80s, someone pointed out that he kind of acted as a counselor in the band. Not sure if that’s accurate, since it’s one interview. Along with that, he admitted into getting into a fight with Fletch backstage during the Masses tour because Alan was defending Dave when Fletch was criticizing his vocals.

Also, one of the things that INFPs have problems with is that they are very perfectionistic about their valued projects. Sound familiar?

He’s definitely a Ne user. If you read and watch interviews of him, you see how he makes music. Basically, he explores all possibilities, experiments, practically improvises his way through until he achieves what he wants.

Then, he uses Si. The best example I can find is in some interviews where he talks about when he’s making music, much of his ideas and inspirations are a result of memories, particularly the bad ones (like Black Box). There was an interview that was published around liquid or subhuman where he said that. To quote the wiki for INFP: “Si collects data in the present moment and compares it with past experiences, a process that sometimes evokes the feelings associated with memory, as if the subject were reliving it.”

And he’s also a Te user, since Martin has spoken of him as being efficient and making lists, planning and such. It might also explain his knack for doing a lot of the technical stuff in the band.

So, he can’t be INTJ or INFJ because they use Ni and he doesn’t. He can’t be INTP because he uses Fi and Te; and not Fe and Ti.

This ended up being waaaay longer than expected. There’s going to be some crossover in to other types because no one is going to be 100% INFP or whatever. So many will want to disagree and point out the NT acting moments in his life to confirm an NT conclusion. But based on these examples and narrowing things down, I’m certain that Alan Wilder is an INFP.
