If not INFP... Then which type would you most likely be?

Every now and then I lurk and post on the ENFP section. It seems like a common issue for them to be confused about their E-ness, so to speak ("am I an INFP, perhaps?"). So I started wondering - what confuses INFP's the most about their type? And what other types would they consider to possibly be?

I realize that most INFP's here are pretty convinced they're INFP, so if you wish, just reply theoretically. Something along the lines of: "If you weren't an INFP, which other type would you most likely be?"

I myself am close to being convinced of being an INFP. But there are a few things that make me doubt it. Amongst them, A) being typed INTP in the past (and having relatively low F scores in the present), B) insufficient knowledge of other functions (and perhaps MBTI in general), and C) feeling alien to the INFP (stereo)type at times.

I think it's fairly easy (or should be fairly easy) to discern ENFP from INFP by checking the inferior function.

INFJ should also be easy to differ from INFP since Ni-Fe is very different from Fi-Ne.

ISFP have a different auxiliary, a different way of perceiving, more concrete, more focused, more oriented on the here and now. They also have Ni as tertiairy.

INTP have a different dominant function, though it is in ways similar to INFP's dominant function.

I still lean towards INTP, but then I would have Fe as inferior. I can sort of relate to Ti and Fe, but I think my inferior is more Te-like. If I were an INTP mistyping as an INFP... Hm, strange, it almost sounds as weird as being mistyped as an INFJ.

(I'm skipping other types, yes, because having two different letters just makes types... too different. That, and I'm lazy.)

What about you guys?

Or what if you were an 'unhealthy' type of INFP, what type would you be confusing yourself with then?

There have been times that I have taken the test where I get typed as an ENFP or an ENFJ but I never felt they fit who I am as a person. I guess if INFP didn't exist then I would be one of those by default because I test like them. But I wouldn't feel kinship with any of those types. The INFP type is the only one that feels like me and resonates with me 100%. The first time I took the MBTI test I received ENFP (my E/I score was 1% toward E instead of I) and I just felt numb and discarded it because it just didn't apply. I had to change a letter around to get it to feel more me.

I usually type as an INFJ or an INFP - my P/J is almost the same. Reading the INFJ description and found out it somehow suited me, but not as much as being an INFP. I guess I was types an INFJ because of how much of an organization freak I am. I do enjoy spontaneity though. I'm not rigid or intolerant, although chaotic things tend to piss me off.

Well, if INFPs wouldn't exist, I would probably be a more feely INTP...it was always the alternative at tests. Just because "I don't put others before myself", some tests considered T higher, but usually it's 55% F - 45% T or something like that.

I think ENTP.. I know in a way it's very different from INFP, but its description comes the closest to me other than INFP. I think I might have even been an ENTP when I was a kid. I also kind of consider it my "favorite type" other than my own. I really like ENTPs, so maybe that's part of the reason why I think this, but I am pretty sure about it.

When I had doubts awhile back (before looking into the functions) I took a test and it came out as ENFJ which surprised me...had to have been "off" results, because I have consistently tested as INFP. When I compared functions and really looked into it and completely ignored the stereotypes, I'm quite sure that I'm an INFP.

I am a mixture of INFP AND INFJ. Having read from several sources that each makes up only 1% of the population explains a lot! There is a feeling of jubilation that there are many others--at least globally--very much like me. Getting to the point of celebrating our uniqueness rather than trying to "mirror" the image of others is quite an achievement. Cookie cutters were not used in the making of humankind, and that is such a wondrous thing. How very much God loves variety! And how very much all of our types compliment each other.

My husband is my diametric opposite. At times, over the decades, we couldn't stand each other! But eventually, we rubbed each other the "right" way. He became more sensitive; I became more spontaneous.

Three cheers for the diversity of talents and gifts this world is FILLED with! May we daily learn to savor the differences among us!!

Like every human being, mood affects my personality. INFP is my resting point, my average if you like. When I'm socialising, I'm more of an ENFP, that's how my value system of making people around me happy manifests. I'm not particularly good at ENFP though. Then, in conversation when reasoning I can often sound like an INFJ or INTJ, when gaming I'm a bit of an INTP and when playing music I occasionally go ISFPish. To be honest, the variation is pretty consistent.

When I'm at my most comfortable moments, I am undoubtedly INFP. After that however, I am probably closest to ENFP.

I used to toggle back and forth between an ISFP and INFP. Since I started working again and participating more in my club, as you can see, I'm nearing towards INTP. And I'm trying to get better at not trying to control the future so, I want to say, "whatever happens, happens."

Thanks for all the replies so far :D

Feel free to not respond (this is my curiosity at work), but I'm going to ask you all more questions. All of you. ^^

@Arrow, was there anything about ENFP/ENFJ that you could relate to, at all?

@fretterfet, what part about you was INTP-ish?

@kaleidoscope, you'd say you have a fairly developed Ti then, cause of the organization thing?

@Azbe, since your F/T are close together, is there anything else but test results that convince you you're more of an INFP?

@pumpkins, what part about ENTP attracts you? Since ENTP = Ne > Ti > Fe > Si, it must be mostly Ne and a bit of Ti? I also like the sound of ENTP btw.

@JASMINE, cynism or enthusiasm? xD And why INTJ?

@Luke, I find ISFP not a weird answer, coming from you. They have Te like us, but I thought maybe you'd be more a person to have Te higher, like tertiary or secondary (ENFP, INTJ)?

@jennandtonic, seeing that ENFJ = Fe > Ni > Se > Ti, I would also say that's pretty off. Any ideas why you may have gotten it?

@Questor, I like hearing how opposites can get along so well with each other :) How would you word your "INFP/INFJ mixture", and why this mixture (and not others)?

@WardRhiannon, same question for you, since your P and J are close together: how would you word it? How does this manifest?

@IAmOrangeToday, I think 'personality' is usually defined as less mood-affected than you describe (it's a technicality), but I think I know what you're saying. ^^ Actually, I think you're an INFP who may have good access to functions that INFP's usually find difficult to access (or ignore all together). Whatcha think?

@Taylor Fulton, why toggle back and forth between ISFP and INFP (why not ENFP/INFP, as example)? Do specific settings like work/club activities "turn" you into an INTP, and what aspects of INTP? Where does your 'need' for trying to control the future come from?

I'm not sure. At first I thought "well, maybe?" and then started to look into ENFJ qualities and was thinking "hell no!" It could have been my mood, it could have just been a bad test (I had never taken that particular test before). Then I really started researching functions, and that's when I realized that INFP applies to me more than anything else. And the following video really hit home for me and clarified what an INFP is. In his videos, he has a way of explaining what types are without assigning blanket stereotypical qualities to any of the types.

Probably an INFJ, there was a time when I was confused and though I was one, since I have always been very responsible and task oriented at school, college and work and I was also a leader in many team projects but when I am at home I am pretty laid back and take things easy. I need external motivation to get things done. I am very slow with my personal projects. I start them and have a hard time finishing them, unlike my job where you see me busy looking for stuff to do.

I can be a little bit of everything really. Sometimes I act like an ENFP when I am socializing with people, others times I look like an introverted thinker when I am very focused on my work. I can see bits of myself in each type.

I recognize this, a lot :)

Some days I still think I might be INFJ [...] so I'm not sure this is possible.
I tried asking an INFJ what Ni-Fe was like, and though her response was quite comprehensible, it is still a sort of outside my imagination. What about Ni-Fe can you relate to?

If with 'simple' you mean, focused on the here and now, on what's right in front of you, possibly very detailed, then yeah, I can see how you relate to ISFP. But then you said you don't relate to Se. So please explain?

I think INTP females are interesting- they don't have the problem of letting emotions control or overwhelm them.
What makes you sure of that?

I guess I have ISTJ and ENFP moments.
Would you mind explaining your ISTJ moments?

On one hand [...] based on my feelings overall.
Fi is a rational cognitive process, but it sparks values and emotions. One thing doesn't have to exclude another. ^^

Most of our conversations end up like "same" "yeah me too" "I was about to say that" and we just sit in supremely comfortable silence after that.
That. <3

This will probably sound strange, but [...] and most of those are things which touch the spirit.
Sorry, but I wasn't exactly surprised when you said that things that involve 'the spirit' stick with you the best. Your posts that I've come across so far just radiate with your spiritualism. ^^ May I ask you to reply here: http://personalitycafe.com/infp-forum-idealists/86103-mind-over-matter-not.html? I'd like to hear your opinion. :)

This may sound strange -

but I really feel that there's a small part of me that is very much INFP, and that there is a part of my INFP friends that is very much INTJ.
At first sight, yes, that sounds a bit strange. Nonetheless I would like to understand, would you mind going over this with a bit more details? ;)

I could easily sway into the INFJ realm. [...] But at heart I'm an introvert and an intuitive.
It goes against my gut feeling, but there's quite a few INFP's who have said that INFJ would be a good fit, if not INFP. Do you (and the others) base this mostly on type profiles or on the functions?

'Selective extrovert', I like the ring of that, and can relate to it. :)

I know what I'll be teaching, but I plan and decide how to present material while I'm teaching. I also love change and need to teach with new material and in different ways every year so that I don't get bored.
Do you then relate to the ISFP profile/functions?

@eyenexepee Cynicism, I'm afraid. Though I don't think I could ever truly be an INTJ. Not denying that I wouldn't want to be one, though. But that's another story. Also, I'm not a really strong P always.
This thread is meant for 'those other stories'. Do tell? :)

Can personality type change over time, or are these just surface changes with the same underlying cognitive functions? [...] I would never want to give that up or change who I am.
I don't know if MBTI personality types change over time. What you say about maturity and accuracy sounds pretty plausible.

It's good to be content with your typing. ^^ You say though you may become more INTJ-like as you mature. You mean to say that as you mature and 'learn to use other functions', it seems you may drift towards an INTJ direction? Ni-Te?

ENFP or INTJ

That said I know I'm neither.
In line with your short reply: why?
(I've seen you write long posts and usually enjoy them. Humor me? ;D )

It seems like I always misjudge them as INFPs and I can relate very much to their way of thinking.
:)
Interesting :O For what reason do you misjudge INTP's as INFP's?

@eyenexepee did some research into it and I reckon my personality quirks are because I access Fe and Ni pretty readily. I still identify with INFP the most.
Ah... Yeah. Wow. :D I mean, I'm more focused on trying to develop some more T and S, but you seem to revert your dominant's and secondary's direction (in->out, out->in). Somehow, that's a sort of logical, but for some reason, it isn't a sort of logical in my mind. Any theories to why it's like this for you?

I always test as an INFP, but I'd have to say my closest is ISFP. At the end of the day, I'm just not a "concrete" by nature sort of guy. In my quest for balance, I think I've cultivated my Se, and Te, but it always seems a bit forced. No matter how much I flex those functions, it never really feels natural.
I think they'll never feel natural. But nonetheless, Se and Te are nice functions to cultivate as an INFP, I think. :)

Thanks all for your replies... And please reply again. xD

INFJ and ISFP.

Some days I still think I might be INFJ because I can relate to Ni and Fe. It's just that Fi and Ne fit better, as does Si. Not idea about the Ts.

I also relate to ISFP because I feel like I'm a bit more simple (or something) than many of the INFPs I've come across. Then again, I don't really relate to Se, so I'm not sure this is possible.

I thought INTP at one point, but there's no way I'm Ti dominant. Fi fits much better.

There's also no possibility of me being an extravert. I'm a hardcore introvert.

It's kind of a toss up between INTP and INFJ.

I am positive about my I (socially anxious introvert from way back into my toddler days) and my N (I am so intuitive, I nearly read minds).

On one hand, I am such a feeler, it's not even funny. I have all the standard INFP emotions and such, and I am HSP and all sorts of fun stuff like that. I love, love, love INFJs. I have a lot of the same personality traits as them, but I would say my J is very low in general, as I am extremely indecisive and flitty.

On the other hand, I am a total logic case. Even though I score in the 90-100% feeler range, I can reason anything out very swiftly and efficiently. I also love math and pattens and such.... but I know my 'decisions' are based on my feelings overall.

I don't know much about the other personality types but I think it'd be INTP, just because I know someone who is a very strong INTP and we're incredibly alike in the way we think about things. Most of our conversations end up like "same" "yeah me too" "I was about to say that" and we just sit in supremely comfortable silence after that.
