Tell me what ISTP stereotypes you have heard of. This is in no way an attack on ISTP's. This thread just gives awareness to the stereotypes of the ISTP personality.

Here is my list of ISTP stereotypes..

1.) Prefers Fact over theories
2.) Criminally insane
3.) Rebellious
4.) Anarchist
5.) Technically advance
6.) Non theoretical ideals
7.) Into extreme sports
8.) Likes the "Too fast too furious movies" lol:crazy:
9.) Likely to be engineers of some sort.
10.) Animal lovers *looks at Roland787*:tongue:

Stereotype with a lot of truth:
They love auto mechanics and spend lots of time working on and improving their cars.

Also, that they don't like talking. I know some ISTPs like that, but I also know some that are more chatty if they know you and are interested in what you're talking about.

Too Fast Too Furious refers to the 2nd movie of the series...I think you mean the whole series in general which would be The Fast and the Furious...my response to you would be...Who the Fuck Doesn't like those movies? I have ISFP/J friends that also dig those movies. They are great, and even greater when you live them out when you get out of the theater and some idiot wants to race their kia against you...now that's some funny shit. As far as movies I don't like, I don't know if the other ISTP are with me, but the movie Crash was a horrible ideal force feeding piece of shit that I couldn't stand. It came off as preachy to me, and was taking me down a predicatable road that I totally rejected. What a piece of shit movie that was. A great and under-rated, but fairly rated in the cult sense is Boondock Saints. That movie is great and kick ass. I personally would rather see that movie represent us ISTP's...but that's just me...or The Crow with Brandon Lee...or maybe even Dragon the Bruce Lee Story...I can go on, but I'll stop now...for now...

Most of what has been said already I am in agreement with especially the mechanically inclined. However some of what is being considered stereotypes is not. Instead we connote the meaning of words. For example I am very technical oriented. It comes from preferring introverted thinking as my dominant function. Based on the dictionary, technical can mean:
  • belonging or pertaining to an art, science, or the like: technical skill.
  • peculiar to or characteristic of a particular art, science, profession, trade, etc.: technical details.
  • skilled in or familiar in a practical way with a particular art, trade, etc., as a person.
  • of, pertaining to, or showing technique.
  • using terminology or treating subject matter in a manner peculiar to a particular field, as a writer or a book: a technical report.
A misunderstanding that I see quite a bit is the fact vs. theory discussion. It has never been claimed that since those preferring sensing are more likely to trust information that is tangible and concrete, they cannot develop their intuition and appreciate theory. We do distrust hunches in particularly when they defy what is in front of us. I don’t think STPs appreciate the abstract, but that does not always equate to the theoretical. Theory is fine only if it’s applicable. The same for NTJs.

just wondering

I have thought about the whole extreme sports thing and think its a sensation thing and me never having been athletic never got into it I gotta admit I do enjoy my altered states usually pot, nothing real serious but was wondering if any non-physically active ISTP out there think its a just a desire for sensation? I like to feel stuff in general like standing on my porch smoking a cig and having a coffee feeling the breeze roll over me looking through the trees at the light flickers through, Anyone agree or feel the same or at least see where I'm coming from?

I enjoy those moments very much, relaxing and energy generating moments!
At the same time i love to going off pist with my skiis or my snowboard where few others would even consider going down or walking around at the roof on my house without security gear, wintertime is great becuse then i have a reason to get upp there and showel snow.

But when im done with the snow i just stand there and enjoy the view (and back in the house i reward myslef with a cold beer).

My brother's an ISTP.
His world revolves around sports and his schedule is always tight with rugby , soccer and windsurfing ; and any extreme sports appeals greatly to him. Not really keen in studying but he doesnt really ignore studies completely.

One thing i notice is that he sorta have a split personality - he can be very mischievous and enthusiastic with his sports mates and his close buddies. However with other people whom he doesnt share interests with - even with cousins and relatives - he become very distant and reserved. Too reserved and ignorant that they think he's proud.

I think so too coz i just dont get it why he must behave so differently with certain types of people. When i ask him why he just say that he dont have anything to talk abt and he's just bored.. He hates to stay at family functions and gatherings where he'll most likely to spend time in one place..He needs to be involved in something he likes to do or something that interest him....

Well, he's rebellious alright..always arguing with his parents and siblings..and never listening to what people say. That pisses me off but since im an istj who doesnt like conflicts, i just ignore him totally. He has a thing for repairing stuffs..so i guess 'the mechanics' goes well with him. He probably want to be an engineer when he's older. If not, there's only one more option, which is anything related to sports - and nothing else.

1.) Prefers Fact over theories - Yes. Unless the theory is backed by undeniable evidence.
2.) Criminally insane- Maybe. But I am more concerned with justice than law.
3.) Rebellious- Rules mean absolutely nothing to me.
4.) Anarchist- Yes.
5.) Technically advance- Nope. I know my way around a computer.
6.) Non theoretical ideals- Yah, what's it to ya/
7.) Into extreme sports- Hate organized sports. Love bungee, mountain climbing etc..
8.) Likes the "Too fast to- o furious movies" lol:crazy: - Nope. Clint Eastwood/Harrison Ford fan.
9.) Likely to be engineers of some sort.- Nope.

1.) Prefers Fact over theories: Not necessarily. You have to theorize in order to figure stuff out. But theories alone aren't enough.
2.) Criminally insane: I can see how we are perceived as such. We don't like to be judged. We react very badly to judgementalism. When I feel myself getting judged by someone who doesn't know me, I see red. I try to avoid people who do that because I know I could be driven to some violent act.
3.) Rebellious: I don't rebel for the sake of rebelling. I'm just not into the same stuff that most people are into.
4.) Anarchist: To some extent. I live off the grid, but I own my property.
5.) Technically advanced: Not at all. I love low-tech solutions to problems. The more low-tech the better. I like to use whatever I have lying around. I do like my tools, but they're not fancy.
6.) Non theoretical ideals: ISTPs are realists, not idealists.
7.) Into extreme sports: Not at all.
8.) Likes the "Too fast too furious movies": I don't like any Hollywood movies. It's always the same old, same old.
9.) Likely to be engineers of some sort: I have a degree in engineering. I don't remember anything I learned though, and I only worked for one year after graduating. It was boring as hell. It's enough for me to know that I can build stuff if I need to.
10.) Animal lovers: Yes, I'd rather be around animals than humans. They don't judge, and they are cuddly.

- Technically minded
- Logical and factual
- Doesn't like to be centre of attention
- Wants to solve a problem in the easiest manner possible
- Loves holidays and travelling
- Reserved
- Stubborn
- Enjoys the company of those with similar interests

- No patience with things he isn't interested in.

That's all I can think of right now.
