Materialism / Hedonism / Physical pleasures

Do any of you find yourselves seeking out happiness in the material world, rather than through intellectual pursuits? We're commonly portrayed as finding joy in pretty deep activities, like writing poems or finding an outlet for our feelings.

I'm curious if it's possible for an INFP to feel more happiness in the physical world. For me, I find myself looking forward to sensory pleasures a lot, which sounds ISFP-ish. But I'm pretty certain I'm a Ne user. I think I enjoy the state of mental happiness they give me, the way they transform my mood, and therefore my thoughts. I also get tons of pleasure from creative outlets like art and writing, and sometimes get into really deep and spiritual thought, but it's not what I automatically turn to for happiness.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with the self-pres instinct, or it's just one of the many things which typology can't pin down.

Yeah, I do this but not to a fuller extent compared to what I have known some people to be like, more like dipping your toe in the water to check the temperature. When the mood takes my fancy, I like going to theme parks, getting involved in physical sports and I was more hedonistic in my teens and early 20's, I liked the thrill of doing things slightly unorthodox. I did go through a promiscuous stage for about a couple of years before I decided that wasn't for me anymore and wanted a more stable relatinship. Even with all these physical pleasures, I don't find them half as enjoyable as when they are also mentally stimulating though.

Sometimes. I absolutely love roller coasters, they make me super-happy!

I dunno... I like hugs, and aestisic pleasures, but I'm more interested in intellectual things. Like, I love books and films, but owning them is much less important than reading or watching and knowing the story. I... what counts as materialistic? I mean, I like sensory pleasures, but that tends to mean I want a comfy position to read in, and then there's food. Mmm... food...
But I get the most pleasure out of reading, writing, drawing, music, learning and deep interesting conversations. So... To a certain extent I like material and sensory pleasures, but not primarily.

I have a love/hate relationship with food. If nutrition and weight gain weren't an issue, I would eat myself into a coma probably every day. I use all the self discipline I have to not do that. Food is big in my life, for better or for worse.

As for materialism, I don't buy many things but somehow I have many things. I have a hard time getting rid of things with sentimental value. And that's like, most of my things. So I wouldn't call it materialism but I do have a lot of junk that I don't need because I never throw anything away.

Physical pleasures, sure I like em.

When it comes to materialism though, no. I've been planning to go through my room (and probably my room in my parents house too) sometime soon and just donating... like, everything, except what I absolutely need. I'm not a big fan of THINGS. The more things you have, the more attached you are to them and the place where you keep them. I don't like that. I like minimalism in this respect.

This reminds me of Chuck Palahniuk's quote: “The things you used to own, now they own you.”

& I agree with you on materialism, I'm a minimalist as well. I'd probably get rid of most of the stuff in my room in a heartbeat, lol.

Same problem here.. It doesn't help that almost everything I love to eat is fattening. Even worse, I'm an emotional eater AND a very moody person :bored: Damn you food. Why must you be so delicious ?!

I can be a very sensual person at times. Smells, colors, tastes, etc. sometimes really just hit me. Like @ethylester, food is a weakness of mine. Not just eating it, but the tastes and aromas. I seriously dance when something tastes so good and I can't express it with just words. I have always been made fun of for that quirk, but I hear other chefs do it as well so I try not to let it bug me. I also enjoy the finer things in life. Art, music, stuff like that. I heard good sex between lovers is a nice physical pleasure too!

I am more into the intellectual pursuits as well, but as a human being, I'm going to have a few interests that reside in the sensual and worldly realms. As will everyone else. I have never heard of a single human being who did not have some worldly weakness that they didn't act on. I think Hedonism gets a bad rap. Hedonism is a broad term that branches into many differing views and philosphies.

I am not a materialist though. I don't have an insatiable lust for worldly pleasures.

I like to enjoy a balance of intellectual hobbies and more athletic/aesthetic hobbies. I spend lots of time reading, writing, listening to music and exploring ideas on the internet, but I also like going for a kick around of football/soccer once a week and I get tennis coaching, too. I guess it's very un-INFP like, but my default personality is more stereotypical introverted hobbies, and I'm not overly bothered. I enjoy doing both on a regular basis, why not do both?
