ISTP's are prone to obsessing over one thing at a time until they've perfected it, or at least lost interest.

What are some things you are currently, or once upon a time obsessed over, if anything?

These can be anything including but not limited to: learning a language, learning myers briggs, aliens, hobbies, a certain sport etc.

Here are some of mine:
-Mixing techno
-Warhammer 40k
-Bruce Lee
-Myers Briggs
-Kung fu
-Paintball
-long time ago I was obsessed with ufo's until I decided I'd never have an answer.
-Video games < its waning with age, but it used to be really bad

Maybe we might spark one another's interests so we'll each have something new to learn?

I have a zombie alien UFO that I've kept hidden in my back yard till I could think of some use for it, I might be willing to part with it for the right price if either of you guys want to make an offer. ^ ^

My list:
Hieroglyphics and a few other ancient or dead writing styles.
Cryptography, primarily older modes of encryption.
Ancient weaponry and weapon crafting techniques.
Leather craft, still one of my favorite crafts.
Jewelry design and repair.
Nutrition and Natural medicine.
The Force!
A lot of the stuff you guys listed as well.
Psychic Ninja Mind Powers of Brainwa... err well I'll just stop there.

None of what you mentioned sounds like an obsession to me. Just your areas of interest and hobbies.
I have been interested in cyphers ever since I read "Alvin's Secret Code." I've made several leather projects, belts, moccasins, knife sheaths, eyeglass case, etc. Kits bought from TANDY Leather. Building a potato canon is currently on my short list, not a real weapon, but I won't go to jail if I get caught.

Currently in my garage I have over 80 speaker components, lots of woofers and tweeters. Am I obsessed? Maybe, maybe not.
I counted 27 hammers in my collection. Am I obsessed? Nah, I just have a lot of tools.

Some more recent ones
mentalism
micro expressions psychology etc.
learning how to do henna tattoos (there are pieces of paper all over the house covered with em!)
learning russian
and have just learnt about the myer briggs thing so am trying to figure out what types my friends are and all that. Asked them to take a test. So far one has and they said they couldn't understand most of the words so could be wrong haha

I know someone who went to Mexico and got one of those supposed "Henna" tattoos, he had a skin reaction and it left him with a nasty scar. I guess it was hair coloring or something like that. Someone else in the same group purchased some supposed top shelf Tequila and when they finally cracked the seal, they discovered the bottle was filled with water!

My biggest current obsession is belly dancing. I am still the most beginning of beginners, though. It's fun, challenging, and works out all the physical nasties that come with stress.

Oh, and male belly dances confuse the fuck out of me. Should I be disturbed or aroused?

I agree that obsession is the wrong word. I think what DJ meant is that when we discover something really fascinating, we want to focus on that thing to the exclusion of all else. For a little while at least, or until we've figured it out or mastered it.

The operative characteristic is how focused we can be, to the point of (temporarily) becoming oblivious to other things. I think this focus might be even greater when there's some kind of challenge involved. For instance, I had a relative who was "obsessed" with inventing a perpetual motion machine. I don't know if he was an ISTP, but I might have inherited some of this trait because I love doing things that other people would consider impossible. Once you get into the realm of the impossible, the possible becomes very dull (and unchallenging) in comparison.

That's how I operate. I throw myself into something 100%, until I find the next thing, and then throw myself into that 100%...

Rousse's interpretation hit the mark.

People tell me I'm obsessed, mostly because I have little to no interest in their lives, and everything I talk about is typically whatever is my interest. So I tend to look like I'm obsessed. Anyway I'm looking for your hobbies and interests upon which you focus all of your attention.

from your list i see bruce lee, i'm a big fan of his. i am also obsessed with myers briggs. when i was younger i got obsessed with football and basketball, i loved nba and nfl, which i will watch now but i am not nearly as obsessed as when i was younger. i bought lots of nba clothing had an insane amount of basketball posters and watched every game i could, from start to finish.

another obsession of mine is/was hip hop. i got into hip hop or rap when i was on the bus and they played it. 2pac got me into deeper stuff and then thanks to jin i got into freestyling and i was a school dj for a little while. i made songs and tried a hand at techno beats as well. my current obsession is food, i eat and eat. other obsessions i had was cars, i'd go to the auto show every year and had lots of auto pictures on my wall. i'd point at cool cars and get excited. women/girls was another obsession of mine. right now the only real obsession i have is food. others have either disappeared or died down.

Forensics (I can't make this one go away)- but specifically I really like bones (memorizing them, drawing them all over my notes, etc.)
Sherlock Holmes- this obsession has been constant since seventh grade... I think I can quote all of the BBC's new mini-series from over the summer.
A Very Potter Musical/Sequel- um... guilty pleasure? I am kind of ashamed of this.
Ghost Stories- anytime anywhere any kind... I know the majority of the sites and stories from around my home.
Star Wars- The old ones were on every night in my room to lull me to sleep. Han Solo might have been my first crush... or maybe I just wanted that sweet YT-1300 of his.

I used to memorize all the lines in Disney movies (my favorites were Little Mermaid and Great Mouse Detective- shocker there). My parents would try to tell me that it was not cute or clever that I could recite the movie line for line with the animated character... this never went away. Some psychiatrist tried to tell my parents I had Asperger's Syndrome. That didn't go over well.

I'm not ISTP but I decided to pollute this thread because I am an inconsiderate git

I'm obsessed with two things:

1) My favorite korean celebrities and their music haha

Image

Kim Hyun Joong ♥

2) Quotes that meant to encourage and inspire the individual self

I am lately obsessed with such things..

Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the Road Less Traveled instead of the well-beaten path.

I have very recently found out that I'm an ISTP, so right now I'm currently obsessing with Briggs Myers. I have stayed up really late this week just to collect ALL the informaton the interwebz will provide me on this subject, haha.

But you guys seem to be able to have more than one obsession at the time? I am definitely not that way. I happend to discover the ISTP thing before I was "done" with my last obsession, which was watching Beverly Hills 90210 (yeah, some obsessions are a litte off track, I know...), so I'm currently really messed up since I'm trying to watch the show at the same time I'm trying to learn more about MBTI, which is really annoying cause I can't really focus on any of it. Sigh.

An obssession tend to stick around for like a month or so, then I have "nothing" for like a week, and then I get stuck on something else. My recent obsessions has been the following:

- a guy that I had a crush on
- the x-files
- re-designing my apartment
- building a bed
- coco chanel
- finding out what true beauty is
- a film project i did
- beverly hills 90210 / MBTI

Here are the bigger obsessions I've had recently:

1. Collecting and refurbishing old hand tools. Stanley Hand Planes in particular, but I almost have a fully functional unplugged workshop.

2. Electronics. I just got my first complex circuit transplanted from a breadboard onto perforated board. I taught myself to solder. I am almost finished with a small alarm system that is triggered by magnetic switches. I want to have it on my food cabinet, so nobody messes with my stuff.

3. Airplanes. Both the real deal and model aircraft.

4. Wooden boats and wooden boat models.

5. Pipe organs. Construction and playing them.

6. I got into flat land BMX in the summer, but it got too cold.

+1

I can spend hours/days finding information on something like colour patterns and productions blocks so that I can draw my own conclusions. I have more than 400 books on the subject, but I don't read them, I just find the information and pictures I need.

hmm...

guitar
computers
A song of Ice and Fire
Gundam (If I had the money and materials, I would so try to make my own...)
Dungeons and Dragons
LARP (Live Action RolePlay for the uninitiated >_>)

would depend on mood, Love all of the shows except for seed/seed: DESTINY.

If I had the choice to build 3 separate ones... Gundam Wing Custom would be one of them fo sure. the others would be a tossup tween Gundam Zephranthes (full Vernian), ZZ Gundam, Gundam 00-Raiser, RX-78, or F-91 Crossbone.

How do you guys act when you're in obsession mode? Everything else shuts down? Don't eat or sleep for, well, many hours? Do you prefer to obsess during day or night?

Me myself is a nightee... I do feel more free to obsess at night, during day it feels like I'm always supposed to "do" something which make me twitchy and less concentrated. At night, I can go on and on for hours, just collecting info on stuff I happen to obsess with at the time.

I do feel a little embarresed about this from time to time, though, since my obsessing can really get out of hand sometimes... Like the other day when my roomie asked why I was so tired, I couldn't exactly tell her that it was because I had been watching a stupid teen show from the 90's all night. (And I mean all night, I fell asleep at eight o'clock in the morning). So I lied. Is this a girl thing you think? Are you guys more relaxed about your obsessing?

Not that it helps because I am also female, but I know what you mean. My roommate woke up one morning to sketches of **** habilis and **** erectus and **** sapien all over the walls of our kitchen. I was lying upside down on the couch, muttering something about occipital protuberance and gracile features. I guess I had fallen asleep halfway through something and she took great pride in the fact that she tricked me into my bed. I call her "mother hen" when she brings that slightly embarrassing story up.
