Currently reading and on chapter two so I really cannot provide much input on types at this time, but the characters are all obviously intriguing, and I'm wondering if anyone who is familiar with the book has any ideas about the types.

I love Donna Tartt books  I started a thread on them a while back.

http://personalitycafe.com/guess-type/220266-donna-tartt-novels.html

From that thread, these were my initial typings:
Richard: INxP
Henry: ENTJ
Bunny: ESFP
Charles: ENFP
Francis: ISFP
Camilla: INxJ
Julian: ENTJ
But now I think I'd go for:

Richard: xNFP? (I'm still really not sure about him.)
Henry: ENTJ
Bunny: ESFP
Charles: ENFP
Francis: ISFP
Camilla: INFJ?
Julian: ENTP

I missed that topic! Thank you for sharing it (you guys got a lot of good stuff there). I'm still on Chapter Two, but my thoughts

Richard: My first thoughts were ISFP and ISTJ, but INFP makes sense. I thought he had some Si, but being a P would make more sense given his impulsive actions. (I know that's a weird justification and not too function-based...) I was also pretty sure from the beginning that he was an Fi user. He wants to fit in, obviously, and he changes himself to reflect others, but INFPs would do this as well yes...? His going against what people want for him seems Fi (his disregard for his counselor's advice, the way he left his parents... just left them), and I also think of the part where he was considering leaving the class... His thought was something like "He liked Julian, but he didn't like Julian that much." As an Fe user, my thought would be more... well, it wouldn't be who I liked, for one, largely because I don't know who I like (I think externally in this sense). I think throughout that Richard is experiencing the opposite. He knows what he likes.

Oh! Not to mention his conversation with the girl from California at the party in Chapter 2. He sort of went out of his way to offend her. Not that an unhealthy Fe user wouldn't do this, but... I think we would be less inclined to.

Henry: no idea yet, Te/Ni kind of makes sense but why that and not INTJ?

Bunny: not sure yet.. ESFP does make way too much sense so far. But I wonder why he and - with your proposed typings - Francis would be chosen, being that they are Sensors? The whole thing seems the height of Intuition. (It would make me happy if they were SFP though, since that would make it less about Intuitive prejudice and more about some other kind of pretension.)

Charles and Camilla: I'm not sure. I'm still at the point where they are being defined together.

My first thought would be Charles ENFJ, Camilla INFJ. (But I haven't read it much, so I do think I am the wrong one about this.)

Just a few pages ago I thought of Camilla as INFJ. I had been wondering - and I agree with the other person on your topic who mentioned she seems like an ISFP externally - but I think she has a touch of Fe and that Ni stuff going on (and that perhaps she is a somewhat stereotypical INFJ? Manic pixie dream girl, only dazzling brilliant uptight dream girl.)

Francis: not sure, I've had a hard time seeing him as an individual character so far...

Julian: Yes, ENTP.

Ah, Henry's fascinating.

I'd probably go INTJ over ENTJ? (Sorry INTJs for adding yet another villain to your cadre of characters)

Just with I vs E, he seems very obviously I - spends a hell of a lot of time alone, has only a few close friends - and even these seem entirely too much for him.

But for Te/Ni vs Ni/Te, I see the latter so much more. Sure, the times he *acts* are driven by Te, but everything serves his Ni, not the other way round. He gets incredibly fixated on ideas, and operates almost entirely from his intuition.

Also - and not sure how relevant this is to typing - but one of the main "intuiting" moments Richard has when he realises what they did - Henry's sort of excited that Richard figured it out, almost as if recognising a like mind.

I'm like. just about to start Chapter 3. I might actually have to stay away soon due to spoiler chance (although if spoiler tags were used, that would help too? I didn't know Henry was a villain, for example... Kind of sad, I love him.)

But @laurie17 That's the thing, the little I've seen of Charles makes me think he uses Fe? Just superficially, yes, but he was one of those who made Richard feel welcome when he came, who wasn't so outwardly cold.

I also like the idea of Julian being ENTP because our latest conclusion on Dumbledore is that he's also ENTP. While I feel the two characters certainly have different spirits, it's interesting to see the similarities.

And I can see the Ne in Richard, yes ^^ INFP makes sense. He was moralistic as his fault, even though he considered himself bohemian. Hmm.

Also, I don't think Camille could be an xxxP, if only because she is described as stern, controlled. These seem like very IxxP traits to me.

Also, is Francis more elaborated on later? There are some details about him, but not as much as some other characters it seems.

Don't worry, Henry isn't a villain in my opinion (so make of our clashing opinions what you will - you'll make up your own mind when you finish, I'm sure ).

Hm, the more I think about it, the more I think Charles could be ENFJ actually... I need to have another read of the book XD

Matthew?

Yes, Francis gets a lot more development. He's probably one of my favourite characters by the end.

Richard: INTP (Way more Ti than Fi)
Henry: INTJ
Bunny: ESFP
Charles: ENFJ (Much Fe)
Francis: INFP (I think he was more of a Ne user, since he seemed so detached and eccentric)
Camilla: INFJ
Julian: ENFJ (very much Fe, just like Charles)
