I can agree with the few people that before me stated that they 'don't like bands, they like songs'. That's why i added the fact about playlists, basically. :)
I don't believe it, I'm normal here! ... I'm not sure I like that.

Anyway, there are still a few bands that produce lots of songs that this INTP loves, so my list would be:

1) Murray Gold
2) Within Temptation
3) Evanescence / We Are The Fallen
4) Joss Whedon and co.
5) REM
6) 3 Doors Down
7) OAR
8) Blutengel
9) Birthday Massacre
10) John Carpenter

Hopefully more people post, I'm interested in seeing the correlation with types and their musical tastes.

I myself am an INTP, and I can relate to the above post, I love specific songs more than bands in general. But, if I had to chose 10 artists that produced the higher amount of songs I like, they would be:

1. Sattelite Stories
2. Diablo Swing Orchestra
3. Dir en Grey
4. Frank Sinatra
5. Bajofondo
6. Johann Strauss
7. Cage the Elephant
8. Daft Punk
9. Jamiroquai
10. Two door cinema club

I know Johann Strauss doesn't count as a band or artist really, but there is no better music to listen to while I read or relax.

OK - that's definitely an ESFJ thing - I would make some tweaks here and there, but I could totally deal with that list...when flipping radio stations in my car, I pretty much go between the 90's station, the 2000s station, the 90s alternative station, and the today's country station on a regular basis. Just wow.

INFJ :)

I'm quite specific about music. I have some criteria for what I like and what I don't which means it takes several listens before I have an opinion. I don't think my music taste is based on genre but there is a slight tendency towards either EDM or alternative rock although that might not be representative of the 10 artists below.

Top 10 artists:

Radiohead
Four Tet
Queens of the Stone Age
Elliott Smith
Massive Attack
Portishead
Nero
Gorillaz
Mogwai
Deadmau5

Don't really have a top ten so I'll just name off a bunch.

Yes
Kansas
Electric Light Orchestra
Big Country
Katzenjammer
Moody Blues
Howlin' Wolf
John Lee Hooker
Fleetwood Mac
Dropkick Murphys
The Pogues
Flogging Molly
Blue Oyster Cult
Queen
Alan Parsons
April Wine
Dio/Rainbow/Black Sabbath (basically love Ronnie James Dio)
Boston
The Cars
Deep Purple

I think that's enough to give you the gist of what I like, haha.

Narrowing things down to a specific group of ten is not an especially easy task, so the ten I listened to most in the last 12 months:
- Manic Street Preachers
- R.E.M.
- Radiohead
- Phil Ochs
- The Clash
- The Beautiful South
- The Housemartins
- Redgum
- Green Day
- Billy Bragg

Type: INTP.

Not sure about MBTI but I think I'm either xNFJ or xSTP.

I listen to a lot of different music, and depending on what I feel like listening to I'd imagine my top 10 would shape very differently. A rough idea would probably be something like:

(no particular order)

1. Paul Simon
2. Erik Satie
3. Talking Heads, David Byrne
4. Gorillaz
5. Gray Matter
6. Jan Johansson - Swedish jazz musician
7. The Beatles
8. Jethro Tull
9. Jimi Hendrix
10. Amon Tobin

But other than that I pretty much listen to any genre be it rock, pop, hip hop, punk/emo, alternative, oriental music, African music, classical, jazz, etc.

ISTJ boomer here, so there's a generational difference compared to most of you (though I am impressed with the number of '60's, '70s & '80s artist on many of your lists!).

It's nearly impossible to pick just 10... I like so many different things from before my time ('50s) to current. I could easily generate a top 250 or even top 500 artists list.

Hmmmm...

  • The Who
  • The Rolling Stones
  • The Doors
  • Jethro Tull
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Gov't Mule
  • Heart
  • Pink Floyd
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Santana
Next tier...

  • Stevie Ray Vaughn
  • Collective Soul
  • R.E.M.
  • Moody Blues
  • Eve to Adam
  • Alan Parsons
  • Pearl Jam
  • Nirvana
  • Van Halen
  • Tom Petty

I'll stop there before I go crazy, lol.

ISTJ

Another I-like-songs-not-bands here.
Very hard to choose only ten and wouldn't even try. This is what I'm mostly into for about a year so far (in no particular order of course):
Bat for Lashes
Muse
Florence + the Machine
30STM
Daughter
Depeche Mode
Hans Zimmer
Keane
Enya
London Grammar
Civil Twilight
Garbage
Goldfrapp
Moloko
Viva Voce
Kaiser Chiefs
The Birthday Massacre
St. Vincent
+ lots of symphonic soundtracks/scores

Agree with @stiletto -- it's more about the songs than the bands. I rarely buy entire albums anymore.

Top 10

Ennio Morricone
Loreena McKennitt
Glitch Mob
Emancipator
Nujabes
Clean Bandit
The Eagles
America
Agnes Obel
Pink Floyd

INTP - I predominantly listen to EDM, but I do enjoy all other genres and respect great artists!

1) Daft Punk (I think I'm Daft Punk mad)
2) Avicii
3) Calvin Harris
4) Axwell (and Swedish House Mafia)
5) Ellie Goulding
6) Ed Sheeran
7) Porter Robinson
8) Netsky
9) The Gorillaz
10) Deadmau5

(Past 5, not really in order, I have favourites (1-4) and then I have artists I really like but that list would go into the hundreds)
