I've taken the MBTI test in multiple places at different times, read about the cognitive functions etc. I read all the descriptions, looked at famous INTPs and INTJs and I'm still confused. You name it, I've tried it. And I still don't know which one I am! It doesn't matter that much to me, I'm just curious. I took the cognitive functions test and got:

Introverted Thinking (Ti) |||||||||||||||||||||| 10.45
Extroverted Intuition (Ne) |||||||||||||||||| 8.42
Introverted Intuition (Ni) ||||||||||||||||| 7.925
Extroverted Thinking (Te) |||||||||||||||| 7.39
Extroverted Feeling (Fe) ||||||||||||| 5.75
Introverted Sensation (Si) |||||||||| 4
Introverted Feeling (Fi) ||||||| 2.94
Extroverted Sensation (Se) |||||| 2.03

I am definitely (and always have been) and introvert, but I think there must be something wrong with these tests. I'm naturally curious about things in an abstract way but am also incredibly impatient and judgmental. So on the one hand, I could be an INTP (for many reasons, not going to list all of them) but also have strong opinions on stuff. Furthermore, despite this test result, I don't think I have any Fe, I'd definitely put Fi third in line (behind thinking and intuition).

I appreciate that this topic has been brought up many times, but after reading previous threads on PerC and other forums I still don't have the answer! This has lead me to conclude that perhaps MBTI is too specific with what constitutes a particular type.

Define each of the following in your own words, and give an example of how you think you use them:

Ni
Te
Ne
Ti

My understanding of the cognitive functions is more intuitive than scientific. In words, i honestly can't say what any of them are (if that makes sense). I don't know the difference between Ni and Ne or Ti and Te. But at a guess i think I'm:

Ti-Ne-Fi-Se

No. You only get to have one extroverted perceiving function and one introverted judging one :p

At a guess I think I'd say INFP (based solely on this thread). But why is this here instead of the 'type me' subforum?

No. Based on your numbers I'd say INTP, but I never type off a test.

Maybe it's because i mis-interpret certain questions or provide answers which may be more extreme, or perhaps there may be the bias of WANTING to behave / think in a certain way which may influence the outcome. Is this a common problem with the MBTI?

Yep, that's a pretty common problem ^^

The only reasons you give to refute that you are an INTP are invalid. INTPs are more than capable of being impatient, judgemental, and having strong opinions. Take a look at the INTP forum and you will see all those characteristics.

But I have no Fe! I'm definitely Fi no matter what the results say! And from what I've read, INTPs don't have emotions so I can't possibly be an INTP, right?

Well... They have them, they're just not awesome at expressing/dealing with them, generally. The reason I was thinking INFP is because you're so sure you have Fi and also because you had trouble putting how you see the functions into words, which might be inferior Te, but could also just be you being lazy or whatever.

You probably know yourself best, but if you do want input I suggest you head over to 'what's my personality' and fill out a questionnaire because there's lots of people there who would love to tell you what type you are/might be.

You have underdeveloped Fe? Join the club!

Do you think feelers are incapable of thinking/logic? Why wouldn't an INTP have emotions (they are human)? INTP have plenty of emotions. They just may not show them/acknowledge them/deal with them in a healthy way, but they are there.

Everybody had emotions (except socio paths & not all INTPs are sociopaths).

A primary function such as extroverted thinking really doesn't mean someone doesn't feel, it just means its not extraverted.

I am not expert in MBTI but I will tell you that I feel like it is possible. I will not be able to give to fact based response because I never bothered whether I am an INTJ or INTP. It is just which mode is more dominant in me. I have realized over time that when I am on a mission and gathering data I will be closely resembling INTP characteristics. However when I think its time to execute, I am in full on INTJ mode. But the source of confusion IMO is because since I work on a Priority basis, there are some short goals for which I am an INTJ and at the same time for some long term goals I am acting like an INTP. Thats why I think it is possible to be an INTX. Anyhow, what's in the name.

I read the Socionics ILI and that describes me perfectly; especially the Fe and Fi sections. But is INTp different to INTP?
